Introduction
Poodle Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Poodle has a long history. Thought to have been in existence before the 8th century, this strong and brave canine filled many roles. Our pop culture spotlight dog, a courageous Poodle named Moustache, was born in Falaise, Normandy in 1799. His first home was with a grocer in Caen, but Moustache had a wandering spirit and decided to act upon it. Moustache made the decision to go off to war by following a parading group of grenadiers. Moustache followed the regiment right into campaign in Italy.
History states that, after his start in Italy, Moustache fought in several battles under varied command during his career. In Austria, he was wounded by a bayonet and also lost an ear in battle. Joining another unit while still in Austria, brave Moustache fought in many more battles. At one point in his military career, it was suggested that this canine warrior be given soldier’s rations and enjoy a combing of his coat by the resident barber once a week.
It wasn’t all war and fighting for Moustache, he did find a female Poodle mate at the Battle of Essling. Though the pairing lasted only a year, the two became proud parents of puppies that were then looked after by the women based at the camp. Moustache, once called “the prince of poodles”, died on the battlefield at the age of twelve.
Another Poodle who saw war was Sancho. Sancho was found on the battlefield in 1812 at the Battle of Salamanca which took place in Spain, beside his owner who died in the battle. He was rescued by the Marquis and Marquess of Worcester. He became a loyal pet of the Duke and was a favorite among royalty.
A popular movie Poodle is Maurice, of Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement. Maurice belongs to Queen Clarisse and lives a pampered life at the palace, quite the opposite of both Moustache and Sancho. This canine role was played by two Standard Poodles, Gatsby and Thomas. The antics of Maurice make the movie fun; Maurice is seen surfing on a mattress in the sleepover party scene and also loved to the chase the cat, Fat Louie, throughout the film.
Poodle Dog Name Considerations
The elegant and energetic Poodle is thought to have originated in Germany. Their development to the awesome pup we know today took place mainly in France. If you want to name your Poodle based on heritage, then a name like Berlin or Paris would suit. Thinking of a tag based on talent? Poodles were once valued as truffle hunters; Truffle is a cute and unique name for a Poodle. In homage to their talent in the conformation and obedience show rings of today, a name like Champ would be just the fit. For the dog who loves the spotlight, choose Fame, a short and catchy moniker.
Does your Poodle ooze class and character? Consider names like Queenie or Belle for a female and Roxton or Cedric for a male. Some pet parents look to favorite books or movies as inspiration for a name. Others will draw on memories from a wonderful vacation. The options are really limitless; choose a name that has meaning to you and that you like, as you will be calling the name for years to come!
