Introduction
Police Dog Names in Pop Culture
One of the most well-known modern police dogs in the United Kingdom is a large German Shepherd named Finn. On October 5th, 2016, Finn and his human police officer partner PC Wardell were notified that an armed assailant had robbed a taxi cab driver. Finn and PC Wardell set out to locate the suspect.
At the Denton Road area of Stevenage in the United Kingdom, they ran into the assailant who was running. As he tried to jump a fence, Finn grabbed his leg. The assailant reached down with a 10-inch serrated blade hunting knife and drove it into Finn's chest. PC Wardell tried to stop the assailant but he again sliced the knife across Wardell’s hand and into Finn’s head. The attacker was eventually detained and Finn was quickly rushed to the vet.
PC Wardell tried to hold Finn’s chest together to slow the massive outflow of blood while they waited for medical care. He was afraid his canine partner was going to succumb to his injuries. Despite the extreme pain and loss of blood that Finn was suffering from, the loving dog noticed his human partner’s injured hand and immediately tried to lick it in order to staunch the flow of blood and clean the wound. Even in his dire condition, the dog cared more about his partner than himself.
The dog's injuries were severe. He had air leaking from his lungs and he had sustained massive blood loss. PC Wardell waited for five long hours while Finn underwent extensive surgery to save his life. Finn had to have a portion of one lung removed and over 30 stitches. It was touch and go for awhile. PC Wardell was unsure if his police dog was going to live or die. He begged the veterinarians to save his brave K-9 partner.
The road to recovery was long but Finn was a fighter. For three weeks, PC Wardell slept on a makeshift cot on the floor beside his canine partner. He didn't want to be far from Finn and he wanted him to know how much he truly meant to him. Within 10 weeks of the assault, Finn was ready to hit the beat again with his partner.
After the attack on Finn, many lobbied to have harsher laws put in place for anyone who assaults a police dog. The new law was called ‘Finn’s Law’. At the age of 8, Finn was finally retired from the police force and went to live with PC Wardell and the rest of his human family.
Police Officer Dog Name Considerations
A police dog, also referred to as a K-9, has been specifically trained to assist law enforcement. They function in a wide range of capacities such as protecting their partners, tracking, searching for drugs and explosives, locating missing people, and finding crime scene evidence. For over a hundred years, dogs have been used successfully in law enforcement around the world. One of the most infamous cases of police dogs being used was when British police turned to Bloodhounds to try to track Jack the Ripper through the streets of London. In 1899, law enforcement officials started to officially train police dogs to work alongside officers in the field. Their loyalty and selfless devotion quickly earned them a reputation. By 1910, Germany had over 600 specially trained police dogs.
It was not until the early 1970s that the use of police dogs became commonplace in the United States. Nowadays, all branches of American law enforcement use dogs. They are used not only at the federal level but also by cities and municipalities. Think about the breed of dog you have chosen as your companion. Do they have the K-9 persona?
Police dogs have the same rights as their human counterparts. It is a crime to attack or kill a police dog and that is punishable in the same fashion as if they were a human police officer. Canines are now outfitted with bullet proof and ballistics vests for added protection. They are even bestowed with badges. .
Dogs who are used as police dogs typically live with their partner in a home environment when not on duty. This gives the canine a well-rounded lifestyle that is emotionally fulfilling and not all work. It is also believed that allowing the dog to live with its human police officer partner helps forge an even deeper bond that is required in the field during life and death decisions.
