Poland Dog Names

A famous dog in Poland is Dzok, in English “Jock” the Dog. According to legend, up until the summer of 1990 Dzok was a happy dog. It was then that his master suffered a heart attack on Rondo Grunwaldzkie roundabout; he did not recover and Dzok was left behind. The loyal pup spent a year waiting for his master to return, remaining right where his master had fallen. The pooch was able to escape the grasp of the Krakow animal shelter and ultimately became close with a woman named Maria who would visit and feed him. Dzok went home with her and lived there until she passed away. At that point, Dzok was sent to the shelter, however he managed to escape. It is thought that he was hit by a train not long after.

A statue in his honor was created by famous Polish sculptor Bronislaw Chromy and located by the river on Bulwar Czerwienski in 2001. The monument shows a dog being held by hands, meant to symbolize his devotion and loyalty. The front of the sculpture includes an inscription; “Dzok, the dog. The most faithful canine friend, ever epitomizing a dog’s boundless devotion to his master”.

Another famous dog in Poland is actually a toy. The Polish toy dogtrotter named Pocker has travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometers in order to promote the adoption of animals worldwide. The stuffed pooch travels with people who encourage others to adopt dogs rather than purchase them. Katarzyna Pisarska is Pocker’s “mom”; she is a journalist, writer and friend of animals in need. Pocker’s motto is “Adopt! Don’t spend money for love” and he promotes that slogan wherever he travels. He travels to all continents as the problem of homelessness is global. During the campaign, Pocker has been all over; to the USA, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Greece, Australia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, Tanzania, Palma de Majorca, Sri Lanka, Gambia, Senegal, Maldives, Malaysia, Thailand, Israel, Warsaw, Paris, Venezia, and more. The campaign has simple rules. Pocker can be taken home for no less than 24 hours and no more than 10 days. He can come to your workplace, a restaurant, wedding or dinner, and can join you for exercise or travel. You must then upload a photo story of your adventures together on his fan page. The dog is passed from one person to another; he is not sent by mail or courier or packed in a suitcase. He is taken care of as if he were a real dog. In addition to posting on his fan page, you must tell at least one person to adopt animals rather than purchase them.
