Introduction
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is an active and quick hunting dog. Considered a hound, their talent for hunting rabbits is quite impressive. Pequenos love to run and jump outdoors, but they can be very good indoor pets as well.
Being quite small, this little rabbit hunter only weighs about 13 pounds. They are known for their almond-shaped eyes and their little head, and they are also very muscular. They have a thick and wiry coat and come in many colors. From Portugal, the Portuguese natives use this breed to hunt with but also enjoy them as family pets due to the fact that they have a loving personality.
Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Dog Names in Pop Culture
Meet Pirata, which means pirate in the Portuguese language. Pirata was at the 2014 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Competition with her owner, Karen. This was quite the event, as up until the previous year the Pequeno was not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They only started coming into the United States twenty years ago! Pirata didn’t win in 2014, but in 2016 this cute little wire-haired hound won the Best in Breed at Westminster. There were three tiny Podengos in the event, which goes to show this breed is making their way into dog-lovers’ hearts.
An article in a 2018 edition of the Hartford Current, a Connecticut newspaper, featured the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno breed five times over! Yes, Margaret Boisture of a Windsor kennel was featured in the news with her five Pequenos: Mr. Wiggles, Tia, David, Cabrita, and Fado. The article discussed her hounds and the upcoming Westminster competition, and gave credit to the up and coming breed.
Another Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, Xana, an ownerless stray, was found on the streets in the country of Portugal. The now owner, John, brought her home to the United States and had her trained. They quickly recognized her adeptness at hunting, not rabbits, but pheasant! Xana is featured in Portuguese Podengo Medio & Grande, An American Club specifically for the breed.
In the news site called Southwest Today from 2013, the focus once again is the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. It is more of a congratulatory article for the fact that this cute and avid hunting breed was finally recognized and accepted into the American Kennel Club.
Cino is another Pequeno in the spotlight. He was established in the field of competing at only a year and a half old! His owner, Jenni, is quite proud of his tenacity! Cino came from Brisbane, Australia, and was a part of the very first Pequeno litter in the country. Cino was one of the dogs featured in the 2011 Royal Melbourne Dog Show and enjoyed the competition as this was the very first one ever to feature this breed.
As the breed is becoming more accepted and loved, articles are popping up online featuring them. They are just too cute not to share with the dog-loving world!
Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Dog Name Considerations

Names like Agueda, meaning good-hearted, or Sachi, meaning blessed child, may be what you are looking for. If you choose to name your dog after other characteristics such as the color or personality, you may need a few days to think about the ideal name. Getting to know your dog by spending those first precious days together will help a name come to your mind. Names for the color and appearance you may consider are Sable, meaning black, or Coco for a brown dog. Fitting titles that go with the personality of your new companion may be Asha, which means lively in Arabic, or Leala, which means loyal. You may also wish to combine names, such as a first name derived from Portuguese and a middle name to fit the personality or appearance, or vice versa. No matter which name you choose, your dog will be happy to know he is with a new family and is loved!
