Introduction
Persona 4 Dog Names In Pop Culture
Cerberus' role in the Shin Megami Tensei series, as well as in the Persona games, tends to fluctuate from game to game; in the first installment of the Shin Megami Tensei series, Cerberus can be added to one's party by fusing Pascal, the protagonist's pet dog, with a spirit in the Cathedral of Shadows. This version of Cerberus has less fixed personality than some of the creature's later incarnations in the series, as he's so incredibly loyal to the protagonist that he'll commit good deeds or heinous crimes depending on whether or not the protagonist is a kind or malicious person.
Cerberus had much more agency and a personality of his own when he appeared in Shin Megami Tensei: If... In this game, the mythological characters and deities who have appeared and reappeared in the various SMT games can be digitized and stored on computers and the like. When Cerberus is initially encountered in SMT he is initially trapped in a floppy disk. Early on, the player character is unable to release Cerberus from his digitized imprisonment, and it isn't until the player character encounters a character by the name of Katsuhiko Sato that the deified dog can be unleashed. Once set free, Cerberus immediately vents his frustration with being confined to a floppy disk. Cerberus can then be fought right there on the spot or allowed to leave, where he can be fought later. Either way, once Cerberus is defeated, the guard dog of the Underworld can be added to one's party if the correct courses of action are taken.
Fans of Persona 3 will recognize Cerberus as being the Initial Persona of none other than Koromaru himself; after certain events take place in Persona 3's story, the pint-sized pup is able to summon Cerberus at will! As Koromaru's Persona, Cerberus specializes in Fire Based attacks as well as possessing particularly potent Agility stats.
Persona 4 Dog Name Considerations
For starters, if you're a fan of the Persona series and you own a Shiba Inu you're in luck; Koromaru, a name based off of the adorable grey pup who first appeared in Persona 3, would make an excellent name for your dog! While Koromaru may not have had a major appearance in the base version of Persona 4, he did appear as a playable character alongside Ken Amada in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
