In The Penguins of Madagascar film, Rico is the "quartermaster" of the penguins. He is a "second" to the Skipper (the leader of the penguins). Rico does not speak much in the film; in fact, he mumbles more often than not. Rico is known for storing all types of items in his stomach. Part of the comedy is that sometimes these items are larger than Rico. Rico is a handy fellow to have around; he can often be found building items at the bidding of the Skipper. Other times he is involving in demolishing items.

Rico is also the name of a dog that is associated with some of the most interesting research involving canines. While recall generally is not one of the areas that dogs seem to have strength in, Rico was able to understand at least 200 simple words. Rico's owner had made this claim, and animal psychologist Juliane Kaminski decided to test the owner's claims. Rico was proven to understand thirty-seven out of forty words that the Kaminski team spoke to the dog. In addition, Rico was able to retain this information for up to a month. Rico is said to have the same level of vocabulary as a dolphin or parrot. A song has been written by a Ukranian band titled, "Rico the Clever," which details the story of Rico.

Another pup with the moniker of Rico is a dog that served in the American military. Rico is a German Shepherd. He served in a unit alongside his current owner, Russ Beckley, Junior, in Afghanistan. By the time Rico was relieved of his duties, Rico had participated in 240 missions and at least thirty firefights. He was "discharged" in 2012, and he was sent to live with Russ' parents while he finished his own tour of duty. Then, Rico became the chief companion of Russ Buckley, Senior. Rico spent his days sitting by the door waiting for Russ, Sr., to arrive home.

Rico spent a happy two years as Russ, Sr.'s constant companion. After two years, Rico became ill. The Beckley family planned to give Rico a military funeral, which Russ, Jr., was allowed to take leave and attend. The family invited Rico's friends to come and say goodbye, and, when everyone had had the opportunity to visit with Rico, the vet administered the shot. Rico was placed in a flag-shaped coffin and laid to rest. Rico was honored for his service as a companion and for his military service.
