Introduction
The capital and largest city in Suriname, Paramaribo is located on the banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo district, about 9.3 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The city is home to about 241,000 people, which is about half of the population of Suriname. Paramaribo’s historic inner city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The city is Suriname’s business and financial center, consuming about 75% of the country’s GDP.
The city of Paramaribo has a lot to explore, including a myriad of unique name possibilities, one of which may be perfect for your pup.
Paramaribo Dog Names in Pop Culture
Remy Kenneth Bonjasky is a former kickboxer who was born in Paramaribo. Bonjasky won the K-1 World Grand Prix super heavyweight championship three times (2003, 2004 and 2008) and earned the nickname, “The Flying Gentleman”. Remi, short for Remington, is also the name of a two year old Golden Retriever who is considered a teammate of a North Carolina baseball team.
Remi’s technical title is “psychiatric medical alert facility rehabilitation service dog”. He was brought to the team by athletic trainer Terri Jo Rucinski to help players that are recovering from surgery. Outfielder Brian Miller, a junior who had surgery, reported that canine therapy worked. He explained, “All of my rehab was taught and done through Terri Jo and obviously Remi was with her every day. Being injured isn’t really the most fun thing to go through so it was definitely fun to have Remi there with me”.
Remi went through a year of training to learn more than 100 commands; in fact, according to the university, Remi can follow commands that are written on cue cards. In addition to helping his teammates with their recovery, Remi helps out on the field. He will carry a bucket of balls to the umpire before the game starts and even hold a hat or glove in his mouth for the national anthem. The pup is even able (and willing) to open the refrigerator so that players can grab a cool drink.
Remi is the only service dog that is assigned to a particular ACC team, where he helped them go 47-12 in the regular season, leading to an overall second seed in the NCAA tournament.
Remy is also the name of a therapy dog who is registered with his owner, Katie Selzer, as a Paws and Think Therapy team. Katie had been looking to adopt an older dog when she found a photo of the retriever on the Indianapolis Animal Care Services website. The pup, who was thought to be five years old at the time, appeared to be smiling in the photo. It turned out he was not available for adoption yet, as he was in a program at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center. A few days later she was able to meet Remy, who had graduated from the Pawsitive Corrections Youth-Canine training program. After a walk together, she knew that Remy was the dog for her. In 2017 Katie was looking for a way to give back to the community and encountered Paws and Think. Together, Katie and Remy have been able to give back to their community as volunteers.
Paramaribo Dog Name Considerations
Deciding on a name for your pup is no easy feat. Considering you will be calling the name you choose many times a day for years, to come, it makes sense that you want a title that feels “just right”…and that you feel comfortable that you won’t get tired of.
A way to find name ideas for your pup that have meaning to you is to choose a place that you care about. Take Paramaribo in Suriname. The country’s capital and largest city, Suriname, Paramaribo has a lot to explore and while on a virtual adventure you can come across a number of unique name opportunities for your canine pal. Consider naming your male pup Brownsberg, in honor of Paramaribo’s Brownsberg Nature Park. For a female pooch, those who enjoy the outdoors can consider the name Peper, after Peperpot Nature Park. You can also choose to name your pup after a well-known person from the city; for example, you can decide on the name Pim after Pim de la Parra, a film director born in Paramaribo.
With a name from Paramaribo, your pup will have a unique moniker and you will receive regular reminders of a place with meaning to you.
