He is lovable and extremely brave. As the show progresses, he does become more recognizable as the main character and half the fun of watching the show is watching Henry grow up into a young man. He does a lot of his heroics on his own, but in the second season, he gains a near constant companion in the form of Pongo. Pongo is a lively Dalmatian who was first owned by Archie the therapist.

Pongo always seemed to know what was going on, even while the curse was still in effect. He knew who was who and was extremely resourceful. In the first season, his skills help the characters find John Doe, who is later revealed to be Prince Charming. He always seemed fond of Henry and the two were good friends from the start of the season. Pongo’s keen senses helped the cast get out of a few sticky situations. After the curse was broken, it seemed that the character’s troubles were finally over and that they would get their happy ending at last. This was not the case and the characters still had a lot to get through before they could go home.

In season two, when it appears Archie has been murdered, the logical decision was to give Pongo to Henry. The two comforted each other and even when it was revealed that Archie wasn’t dead at all, Pongo still preferred to stay with Henry. Pongo continued to feature heavily in the series and it is safe to say that without him, Henry would have been a lot lonelier and Storybrooke would have been much different.

The emotional stakes are high, and you cannot help but feel involved in the story. All your favourite fairy tale characters are trapped in a land far from home. You want everyone to get their happy ending, even the villains. They are well-written, cast and portrayed. You love all of them, if not at first, then eventually at least.
