Millie

Millie Bush was the First Dog of the Whitehouse during the Bush years. She was the beloved pet of President George H.W. Bush's wife Barbara. Millie was a diminutive Springer Spaniel who was the non-stop companion of the First Lady during the entire presidency. She would become one of the most beloved of all presidential pets to grace the White House. The iconic pooch is known to have “wrote” the best seller 'Millie's Book: As Dictated to Barbara Bush'. The nonfiction best seller hit the shelves in 1990 and was an instant hit. It is the first book of its kind to show what life is like in the White House through the eyes of a dog.

Millie was born in 1985. She was named after Mildred Caldwell Kerr who was a long-time friend of the Bushes. The small dog quickly became a beloved pet and companion to both George and Barbara. In 1989, Millie gave birth to six puppies. Two of the puppies would be named Ranger and Spot Fetcher. President George H.W. Bush would keep Ranger as his own personal pet. Spot Fetcher became the pet of the later President, George W. Bush, and also resided in the White House as the First Dog.

During George Bush's bid for re-election, he is famous for saying, “My dog Millie knows more about foreign affairs than these two bozos." The 'bozos' he was referring to were his presidential opponents Al Gore and Bill Clinton.

Millie became one of the most famous pooches to ever grace the White House. She would attain her own fame through authorship and also by appearing on numerous guest spots. She was on an episode of Murphy Brown, Wings, and Who's the Boss. She was also featured on The Simpsons.

Despite her fame, Millie was just like any other pooch. She was rumored to favor just regular dog food. The Springer Spaniel was also often getting into trouble for hunting on the grounds of the White House. She was rumored to have killed six squirrels, two pigeons, and even a rat. One time, in the Old Executive Office Building, she even had an accident in front of esteemed guests.

In 1997, Millie died of pneumonia. Her death was very unexpected and both the former President and First Lady took her passing away very hard. Nowadays, a photo of her with First Lady Barbara Bush graces the Smithsonian. A dog park, located in West Houston, was created in Millie's honor. The park spans 15-acres and is dubbed, 'Millie Bush Bark Park'. It was opened in 2004 to much fanfare.
