The best dog friendly neighborhoods in New York

52

52

Upper West Side

Expect to meet some new four-footed friends on your walks through the Upper West Side — this is a "pawpular" spot with dog walkers in New York City! If Fido would rather run, make a beeline for one of the neighborhood's six off-leash dog parks. Morningside Dog Park is loved by locals for its seclusion, while the off-leash area at 72nd Street & Riverside Drive boasts sweeping vistas of the Hudson River. If your buddy is a social butterfly, or if you're looking to socialize your puppy, 105th Street Dog Run is just the ticket! End your dog's day out with a cold brew or a hot meal at one of Upper West Side's many dog-friendly bars and restaurants overlooking the river.

Astoria

Just across the East River from the Upper East Side, Astoria offers a true taste of New York City's multicultural heritage — without all the tourists. As you and Fifi walk the quiet streets of this trendy neighborhood, you'll discover an array of canine-friendly cuisine options, including Bosnian, Brazilian, Greek, and good old-fashioned American comfort food. Your pup's favorite place will undoubtedly be the dog run on Hoyt Avenue, a popular spot to meet up with the local doggos complete with two separate areas and a fun splash pad. Another alternative is Astoria Park, which permits pups to romp leash-free in the early morning and late evening hours. Several vet clinics and groomers keep Astoria's "pupulation" in tip-top shape.

Upper East Side

The dogs of the Upper East Side, one of Manhattan's wealthiest and most lucrative locales, are truly living in the lap of luxury. Nestled between East River and the world-famous Central Park, "Pupper" East Side offers plenty of places for your pal to play. Central Park requires canine visitors to stay leashed between 9 AM and 9 PM, but they're welcome to let loose outside of those times. For leash-free fun any time of day, head to Carl Schurz Dog Park. Then, leash up and stroll down Lexington Avenue to pamper your pal at one of the neighborhood's dog-friendly department stores and boutiques.

Chelsea

The first thing you and Spot should do in Chelsea is walk the High Line for a breath of fresh air amid the New York City smog. Along this converted freight line, you'll enjoy a birds-eye view of the neighborhood's colorful murals, art galleries, and antique shops. Paw on over to the Chelsea Waterside Dog Park for some off-leash freedom. In the summer, your pal can make a splash in the doggy pool, and fresh drinking water is also provided. When you're ready to chow down with your Chow Chow, some of the dog-friendly restaurants in Chelsea even have their very own menus for canine customers. "Bone" appetit!

Brooklyn Heights

"America's first suburb" is also one of the most charming districts in the five boroughs. Take your woofer for a walk along the quiet, shaded streets lined with historic homes. If Lassie minds their leash manners, treat them to some playtime at Hillside Dog Park, a small enclosure that comes complete with a doggy pool in the summer months. Once you've worked up an appetite, grab a "pupperoni" pizza or some Southern comfort food at one of Brooklyn Heights' many dog-friendly restaurants. For the perfect end to your Brooklyn Heights adventure, walk off those extra calories along The Promenade. The views of East River and the iconic Manhattan skyline make this a firm favorite with dog walkers in New York City.

The most popular dog names of 2023 in New York

Guest AuthorAmber Spencer-Knowles – Stacker Media

You've done everything on your checklist. Got pet insurance and found a great, affordable veterinarian. Didn't forget to puppy-proof the house and scanned high and low for the best quality dog food. Just one thing's missing: What will you name your new furry family member?

In the past century, man's best friend has had various popular names. Spike, Fido, and Buddy are classic names. But what if you're looking for something more unique? Or, you want to give them a classic name, like Charlie? Whatever you choose to call your puppy pal, you want to make sure it's just right.

What's in a name, you might ask? Sometimes, what you see is what you get. Other times, it's quite the complete opposite. According to the PetHelpful, the ideal dog name should be kept to one to two syllables. Why? You'll get your puppy's attention faster. Another helpful tip: give your furry friend a name you won't get tired of repeating.

Wag! ranked the 50 most popular dog names in New York based on its users' data. Find your next pup's name below, or see if your canine companion's name made the cut.

dog-running-new-york-city

Despite being a bustling concrete jungle, New York is surprisingly dog-friendly. With dozens of dog parks and pet-friendly businesses dotted across the Big Apple, New York is a city of dog lovers. Let's look at some of the best animal shelters, restaurants, and more to visit with your dog in New York.

Animal shelter spotlight in New York

NYC's Second Chance Rescue gives abused and critically injured dogs and cats a new lease on life. Since 2009, Second Chance Rescue has saved the lives of over 14,000 animals. Some of its primary aims include reducing euthanasia rates and supporting overwhelmed animal shelters.

Second Chance Rescue holds a special place in our hearts. We partnered with Second Chance to co-host an adoption event in Times Square in August 2022.

Our own Chief Marketing Officer, Patrick McCarthy, even adopted a sweet black-and-white pup named Olive from the event. Olive flew back with Patrick to California, where she now spends her days cuddled up with her big sister, Ziggy the Pug.

Where to take pics of your dog in New York

With world-famous landmarks and iconic architecture, NYC is a popular place to take pics with pups. Make your dog Insta famous by snapping some pics in these top dog-friendly New York photo spots.

taxis and crowds of people in times square, nyc

Times Square

Illuminated with over 200 ads and home to several famous buildings, Times Square is an excellent spot for an impromptu photo shoot with your pup. Snap a photo in front of the New York Stock Exchange, or strike a pose in front of M&M's World. As long as your pooch doesn't mind the crowds, Times Square is ideal for taking puppy pics.

Grand Central Station

You'll find few building interiors more beautiful than the main concourse of Grand Central Station. It's arguably the best indoor location in NYC to take pictures of your dog. Its warm lighting and intricate design features mean you can easily snap some great pics. Try visiting late at night when the crowds have thinned out for the best photo ops.

Brooklyn Bridge

A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is a New York staple, offering sweeping views of Manhattan's skyline. Plenty of benches allow you to stop and take pics of your canine companion. Early mornings when fewer people are on the bridge is one of the best times to take pics.

DUMBO, Brooklyn

Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass (DUMBO) is one of New York's most famous photography spots. Located on Water Street and Washington Street, DUMBO gives impressive views of the Washington Bridge with the Manhattan skyline in the background. You can even frame the Empire State Building between the bridge's legs.

Dog-friendly bars and restaurants in New York

While many restaurants in New York are pet-friendly, it's worth noting dogs are only allowed in outdoor seating areas unless they're service dogs. Always check before visiting an NYC restaurant or bar to ensure your woofer is welcome.

The Wilson, Chelsea

The Wilson is one of the best places in the Big Apple to chow down with your canine compadre. This chic, upscale seafood joint offers a full menu for dogs — choose from fur-baby favorites like grilled steak, burgers, and chicken. The Wilson even has unique dog menus for special occasions, like Valentine's Day. Plus, the cozy patio will please pups and pet parents alike.

LuckyDog, Williamsburg

Looking for a late-night watering hole for you and your dog? Brooklyn's LuckyDog gets rave reviews for its dog-friendly atmosphere and events. The back patio is a "pawsome" spot to hang with your hound in between games of pinball and pints of craft beer.

Boris and Horton, East Village

Boris and Horton is a dog-centric café named after the co-founders' fur-babies. It brands itself as NYC's first dog-friendly café and is one of the few establishments where woofers are welcome indoors and off-leash. As well as serving up coffee, beer, and various snacks, Boris and Horton hosts almost daily dog-friendly events, including adoption drives.

Dog-friendly events in New York

Events in NYC are constant, but which ones welcome woofers with open arms? Check ahead when planning to take your pooch to a local event. Over the past few years, many annual events have been canceled and are yet to return. Others might not be so happy you brought your hound along. With that in mind, here are a couple of "pawpular" dog-friendly events in New York.

Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival

Mark the start of spring by joining New York's Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival. Hundreds of New Yorkers don costumes and kooky homemade bonnets every Easter Sunday and strut through the Big Apple. Bring your pup and dress them up in a fun outfit! There are no requirements to join — just show up at St Patrick's Cathedral on Easter Sunday at around 10 am.

Tompkins Square Halloween Parade

Tompkins Square Dog Run is one of NYC's oldest and largest dog parks. For over 30 years, the park has hosted an annual Halloween parade, where pet parents and fur-babies wear costumes and contend to be crowned Best in Show. You'll get to see some truly creative outfits and have the chance to win some fun prizes for your woofer!

Pet photographer spotlight: The Dogist

Since 2013, Elias Friedman has grown from being let go from his job as a corporate marketing developer to one of the world's most famous pet photographers.

Known as The Dogist, Elias took inspiration from similar projects like Humans of New York and set out to photograph dogs across the city. Over the last decade, he's snapped pictures of over 50,000 dogs and has a social media following nearing 5 million people. Keep an eye out for Elias while exploring NYC — if you're lucky, he might even snap a pic of your pup!
