Magic is fun and exciting to watch and Magic the dog is even more interesting. Diabetes detection dogs like Magic are able to warn people with diabetes when their blood glucose levels drop too low or get too high. And they will warn their owners so they can test themselves and take the appropriate action. Magic, the diabetes detection dog is a golden Labrador Retriever who is able to tell when his owner, Claire Pesterfield, needs to check her glucose levels.
Claire was diagnosed with diabetes in 1986 and she is also a diabetes specialist nurse in Cambridge. She uses an insulin pump and Medtronic sensors for continuous glucose monitoring, but she also has Magic, her special weapon against diabetes. Magic is able to smell any change in Claire’s glucose levels, which is important because she has impaired hypo awareness. This is the inability to tell when her glucose levels are too high or too low and is a life-threatening complication of diabetes.
With this type of diabetes issue, episodes of fainting, unconsciousness, and seizures are common because the individual is unable to know if their sugars are getting too low or too high. Lucky for Claire, Magic is able to do it with his nose. In fact, Magic is 99% accurate at detecting glucose that is too high or too low. He is trained to alert Claire no matter what she is doing, even at work, if her levels drop below 4.7mmols/L so she can take appropriate action before she is too confused to do anything.
Magic has alerted Claire approximately 3,500 times in the past few years that they have been together, and she said he has been right almost every time. So, this awesome pooch has saved her life over three thousand times! That is amazing. Claire said that before she got Magic, she was constantly having to check her blood glucose levels every 20 to 30 minutes to prevent the possibility of seizures and coma. She would even set her alarm at night to test her blood every hour, and she was exhausted.
Since getting Magic, Claire has been able to catch up on her sleep because her trusty doggy sits by her bed and wakes her if her glucose gets too low at night. Her husband is also sleeping better because he does not have to worry that he will wake up to a comatose wife. Magic, who has been a lifesaver time and time again, is truly a magical blessing for Claire.
Now You See Me Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Preparing for a new fur buddy is not difficult, but you do need to make sure you and your canine kid have everything you are going to need. Your poochie is going to need a nice, comfy doggy bed to sleep in, a bunch of fun dog toys, a leash, and collar for taking walks, tasty treats and kibble, crunchy bones, a good veterinarian, and also a name that fits. Finding the perfect moniker for your forever friend is not too hard if you spend some time with them to see what kind of personality they have. They may even have a cute habit or quirk that will help you find their title.
If you like the movie, “Now You See Me,” you may want to give your canine kid a name that pertains to one of the characters or the actors who play them. For example, Ruffalo would be a cute dog name after the actor who played Dylan Rhodes, Mark Ruffalo or Atlas, after the main star, J. Daniel (Danny) Atlas. You could also choose a name that has to do with magic like Abracadabra, Merlin, or Wizard. Some other cute ideas are Mystic or the Spanish word for Mystic, which is Mistico.
