Introduction
The Norrbottenspets is the national dog of Sweden and is considered to be a rare breed within the United States. The Norrbottenspets was once known as the Nordic Spitz but was renamed for the Norrbotten region of Sweden where they were discovered. They are a long-lived and hearty breed, many living 20 plus years. The Norrbottenspets makes a fantastic family companion. They are gentle and loving with children of all ages and their double coat is short and requires minimal maintenance. This breed is also naturally odor free. As with any dog, the Norrbottenspets does require daily exercise but is also content to curl up at your feet while you are lounging after a long day.
Norrbottenspets Dog Names in Pop Culture
Because the Norrbottenspets is a rare breed within the United States, not many people are familiar with this spitz dog from Sweden. They are becoming more popular in Europe and are starting to trickle into the United States and Canada. That is why Neda Joss of Penticton, British Columbia decided to look for her next Norrbottenspets overseas. She searched until she finally found what she was looking for and in May of 2009 she flew to Lapua, Finland to meet Puuhapete. Officially named Pohjanukon Puuhapete, this puppy was called Puuhapete by his breeder, but once he came home to Canada, Joss started calling him Bob. Bob was bred by Pohjanukon Kennels and Joss was on a waiting list for two years before she finally brought her new Norrbottenspets puppy home. She had met Seppo Pohjanoksa, founder of Pohjanukon Kennels, in March of 2007 when she visited Pello, Finland for the Grand Champion Hunt Trial for Norrbottenspets. Bob quickly made himself at home in British Columbia and as he grew, became her husband’s companion on his many mountain bike rides. Along with racing along mountain trails, Bob enjoys spending time in the field hunting and in the conformation ring. Bob earned his Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) championship quickly. He also competes in Rally Obedience and earned his Rally Novice (RN) title. Bob has also earned the first leg toward his Rally Advanced (RA) title. Being a hunting dog, he also received his Tracking Dog (TD) title.
Bob is just one of a few Norrbottenspets that make their home at Savo Kennel in Penticton, British Columbia with Neda Joss and her husband. Joss first became involved with the Norrbottenspets breed in 2005 when she bought her first puppy. The Norrbottenspets have become a part of her family and she has begun to appreciate the Finnish and Swedish cultures that are so thickly entwined with the rare breed. Joss has made several trips overseas to Finland and Sweden learning all she can about the breed and their heritage. It is her goal to preserve the Norrbottenspets original purpose and heritage. The Norrbottenspets is an extremely long-lived breed with many dogs living well past 20 years old. Joss believes in breeding healthy Norrbottenspets that are long lived and will bring joy and contentment to their families. Savo Kennel is a member of the Canadian Kennel Club, the Canadian Norrbottenspets Club, the American Norrbottenspets Association, the Suomen Pystkorvajarjesto, and the Primitive Aboriginal Dog Society.
Norrbottenspets Dog Name Considerations
You may find it a bit difficult to find a Norrbottenspets puppy to add to your family unless you are willing to be put on a waiting list or import a puppy in from overseas. The hardest part about deciding to bring home a Norrbottenspets will be actually finding a puppy to purchase or adopt. Be certain you have researched the breed thoroughly and are willing to commit to a Norrbottenspets for the rest of their life, which could easily be 20 years or more. Once you have found your puppy to bring home, it will be time to start searching for a name that will suit such a rare, primitive breed. Hailing from Sweden and Finland, there are numerous Scandinavian names to pick from and they all are not as difficult to pronounce as Puuhapete. You can also “Americanize” names to make them into a unique moniker for your Norrbottenspets. For instance, Henrik, which means ruler of the home, can easily be called Hank and still have the same general meaning. There are also a lot of Swedish or Finnish names that are easy to pronounce. Take the time to get to know your new Norrbottenspets before deciding on their name. Their personality will help you decide what name is the best fit for them.
