New Delhi Dog Names

Despite such a dire reality, many people who call the city home form deep relationships with stray dogs. Blackie is one of the many lucky strays who have human caregivers who regularly provide for her and genuinely consider her a beloved friend. Rajrani works at a local cleaner in Delhi's famous Janpath where Blackie frequents. She cooks every day for the large stray dog.

"She likes to eat home-cooked food - usually chapati (Indian flatbread) in the morning and prefers momos (steamed dumplings) in the evening. She gets upset if there is any change in this routine," says Rajrani to a reporter with the BBC. She goes on to say, "I like feeding her. She is like my family, and I get upset if I don't see her even for a day."

Rajrani is not the only citizen of New Delhi to have given Blackie their heart. Deepak GC also works in the same marketplace and has become very fond of the large furry dog.  He says, "Whenever Blackie comes to my stall, she makes me happy. She gives me that much-needed break from my job when I feed her momos. She loves chicken momos and won't have anything else. And if I am even slightly late to feed her, I have to be ready to face her tantrums." 

Unfortunately, as with most street dogs in New Delhi, Blackie has lived a hard life filled with abuse and sadness. Deepak GC says, "When we found her, she was in bad shape. She had given birth to a litter of puppies, but some crazy men had killed them. I took care of her and helped her come out of her trauma. Since then, she has become my best friend." 

At least for now, Blackie has found a haven among human comrades who regularly provide her with nourishing meals, companionship, and kindness. Although she still lives on the streets, she has secured her small section of the city where residents treasure her gentle disposition and are honored to call the homeless dog their friend.
