Introduction
Nerdy Dog Names in Pop Culture
Mister Peabody, whose full name is Hector Peabody, is a 1950s cartoon dog that is often considered a classically nerdy pooch. The dog is white with floppy ears. He wears a pair of black-rimmed glasses. In all of the shows, it is understood that Mister Peabody is an intellectual who is considered the smartest being in the world. He is highly accomplished and brags about his abilities as a business magnate, scientist, Olympic medalist, inventor, Nobel laureate, gourmand, and scientist. Despite his many accomplishments, the pooch is above all a nerd.
The dog is socially introverted and lonely. Mister Peabody decides to adopt his very own human son to share his life. One day, he comes across a tiny, red-haired boy, who also wears glasses. The boy is in an alley and is being bullied by bullies. Despite Mister Peabody's nerdy disposition, he feels a robust parental pull towards the boy so immediately becomes defensive to protect him from the bullies.
Mister Peabody learns that Sherman is an orphan, so he decides to adopt the small boy. The determined pooch goes to court to attain custody. He even talks to the president. His perseverance is successful, and he finally gets to adopt Sherman. Upon finalization of the adoption papers, Mister Peabody tells Sherman not to call him, 'Daddy.' Instead, he says the young boy to call him only Mister Peabody or simply Peabody.
After adopting Sherman, Mister Peabody decides that the boy needs to learn so he builds a time machine so they can travel together. He plans on teaching Sherman about the different aspects of history. Each of the cartoons in the series depicts Mister Peabody and Sherman exploring some other historical adventure.
In 2007, Dreamworks developed an animated film based on the cartoon series. The film was officially released in 2014. The movie differs in how Mister Peabody treats Sherman. In the series, Mister Peabody treats Sherman as a beloved pet and not a son. However, in the movie, he is far more loving and treats the boy as a real son. Also, in the film, there is a love interest for Mr. Peabody named Penny.
In 2015, Netflix premiered an animated series about Mister Peabody. The series uses parts of the 1950s series outline and combines them with more details from the movie. The series on Mister Peabody has become popular and continues to be made by the movie maker.
Nerdy Dog Name Considerations
When considering naming your canine bud a nerdy name you should take into consideration the history of the unusual term. The first use of the word 'nerd' was coined by none other than Dr. Seusss in his book, 'If I Ran the Zoo.' The children's book released in 1950. In the story, the narrator Gerald McGrew says that he is going to collect for his zoo, "a Nerkle, a Nerd, and a Seersucker too." In 1951, after the book's publication, Newsweek used the word to denote a square or a drip. By the 1960s, the unusual word had caught on and was bantered nationwide. Soon it was being used to refer to a person who was bookish and socially inept. Interestingly, alternate spellings also started to spring up in the fashion of 'nurd' and 'gnurd.'
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) all started to use the word, 'nerd.' The 1970s sitcom, Happy Days incorporated the word into many episodes which made it even more popular in mainstream America.
A stereotype developed to the word, 'nerd.' Nerdy people are typically thought of as smart, successful, with a poor sense of style, and socially unpopular. They are often the target of bullies because they are different and stand out from the crowd. The 1984 motion picture, Revenge of the Nerds, further pushed the nerd's appearance and characteristics.
Nowadays, just about everyone knows what the word 'nerd' means and they mentally picture a person who has a nerdy nature. Naming your dog after a classic nerd or some other form of a nerdy name is a great day to depict that your pooch is smart and different than other dogs. Modern society now embraces nerds for their intellect and their lovable natures. This sense of affection is no different than what you feel for your furry best friend.
