Benji and Pumpkin

Stray dogs Benji and Pumpkin used to wander the streets of St. Croix after Hurricane Maria. While trying to survive on the streets, the two dogs met some National Guardsmen who cared for them while they were deployed to the U.S. Virgin Islands in Maria’s wake. Unfortunately, when the Guardsmen left, they could not bring the dogs home. Wanting to ensure their safety, they left the dogs with the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the group promised to keep the Guardsmen updated.

Soon enough, Guardsman Michael Henn was alerted that the dogs were leaving the island for the United States and would be arriving Charleston, South Carolina. Without hesitating, Henn, who lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, over 1000 miles away, took a road trip to pick up the two pups. Henn happily met the dogs after his road trip, as a gathering of animal society staff watched. Henn noted that Benji remembered him first. He and the dogs had plenty of time to reacquaint themselves on the long drive home. Henn stated that they were pretty calm during the drive and are doing well in their transition to house dogs. Pumpkin and Benji may soon get additional celebrity status as they are candidates to be named mascots of the Nebraska National Guard 67^th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

Five Nebraska dogs from the Lutheran Church Charities Comfort Dog program are becoming well-known for their therapeutic efforts. The program has over 100 Golden Retrievers in 23 states that have been trained to be stroked, loved, cried on and held. After the Las Vegas shooting on October 1, 2017, Nicodemus, known as Nico, a Golden Retriever from Seward, Nebraska, made the rounds at the hospital, as well as the Las Vegas emergency dispatch center, the coroner’s office, firehouses, schools, vigils and other places and events. Each of the dogs has multiple handlers and receive more than 2000 hours of training, where they learn to respond to more than one handler. The handlers attend three days of training and learn about 50 commands.

The comfort dogs go to both natural disasters and tragedies caused by people. They attend regular activities in their local areas; nursing homes assisted living centers, schools and colleges, all free of charge. The other Nebraska comfort dogs include Katie, of Fremont, Moses of Cairo, Eddie of Grand Island and Priscilla of Lincoln. While not working, the dogs’ lives are structured to include special diets and two mile walks two times per day. Part of their training shows them that when their vests are on, it is time to work. When the vest comes off, it is time to play.
