Introduction
Officially the Republic of Nauru and formerly known as Pleasant Island, Nauru is an island country located in Micronesia. The country is home to 11,347 people in an area of around 8.1 square miles. The island is made of phosphate rock (one of three great phosphate islands in the Pacific Ocean) with rich deposits close to its surface. Oval in shape, Nauru is in the southwestern Pacific Ocean about 34.77 miles south of the equator.
While the country of Nauru is small, it still has much to offer and may be the perfect place to find a name for your canine pal.
Nauru Dog Names In Pop Culture
A well-known individual from Nauru is Marcus Stephen, a politician who was the President from 2007-2011. A gifted athlete, Marcus represented his country at both the Olympic and Commonwealth Games before moving into politics. Marcus is also the name of a few pups who have received media attention. A young male Akbash dog named Marcus was discovered in the parking lot of a veterinarian’s office in Winters, California. Marcus, who was missing an ear, was there with a female herding dog and their three puppies. All five dogs were taken to the Yolo County animal shelter and Marcus was brought into foster care.
Upon arriving at his foster home, Marcus would not walk; he even had to be carried outside to go to the bathroom. It was thought that he was injured in some way; he just wanted to lay in silence in the garage and would even crawl to his food bowl. While there was some debate over whether his inability to walk was an emotional issue, his temperament was excellent. Marcus was friendly to everyone and really enjoyed visiting with the daughter at his foster home. Marcus would wag his tail and never seemed upset or shy.
A trip to the vet for a full physical gave him a clean bill of health and put his age at about 1.5 to 2 years. No reason was found for his not walking. Fortunately, after his vet visit, as well as having some time being well fed and cared for, Marcus began to come out of his shell. The dog began showing interest in going outside and is a normal young pup.
Another canine with the name Marcus, gained attention as a “staff member” of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. A four-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever, Marcus happily receives tourists with doggy kisses. The hotel explains that Marcus is a part of the Fairmont’s Canine Ambassadors program, which allows “travelers missing their own furry friend or looking for a companion while taking a walk (to) bring along the resident Fairmont dog for extra security and the comfort of home”. The dog has lived at the hotel for more than two years. Marcus initially had attended the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, where he did not graduate because he did not pass the school’s final test. According to hotel spokesperson Lori Cote, Marcus was just too friendly, wanting to give kisses and play fetch, which gets in the way of the work of a Seeing Eye Dog.
Marcus is known as the “Director of Pet Relations”. His work includes taking naps in the hotel’s lobby and walking with guests around the lake.
Nauru Dog Name Considerations
