Introduction
Natural Dog Names in Pop Culture
It was on that fateful journey that the dog's life changed forever. She was spotted by Caron Comas and her partner Julie. They were in their car on their way to do some shopping when they spotted the emaciated animal. It would have been easy to keep on driving but they didn't. They immediately pulled over and tried to get the dog to come to them. But she was too scared and dashed away underneath an abandoned house that sat across the street from Comas' own house.
Comas was a lifelong animal lover and had a dog of her own. She couldn't just abandon the poor, sickly canine. Julie stayed to make sure the dog didn't disappear and Comas went home and gathered up food and water for it. It wasn't easy, but finally hunger overcame fear and the dog accepted a bit of food and water from the ladies. The women were shocked by the dog's condition. Pink, crusty skin, sores all over, one on her left hip so deep you could see bone and muscle, nearly bald and a bag of bones.
Comas turned to Facebook to find help for the dog and came across Pause for Paws, a local rescue for street dogs. .They called Save Our Street Dogs San Antonio Texas (SOS-SATX) to pick the dog up but when they got there the dog was gone. Fortunately, it was because she'd already been picked up by the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS). Pause for Paws had a good working relationship with ACS and the dog was released into their care.
They took her straight to Castle West Animal Hospital and the rescue's longtime veterinarian Dr. Bill McGehee. When someone said, "That dog could use a little sunshine in her life," she was quickly dubbed Miss Caron Sunshine, a salute to her rescuer.
It was going to cost $5,000 for Sunshine's medical care. Pause for Paws turned to social media for support. A Go Fund Me page was started and the community responded generously.
The going was slow for Sunshine but soon she was beginning to heal. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. Vet tech Jennifer Rodriquez formed a special bond with the dog and took her home with her to get her ready for adoption and continue her therapy for hip dysplasia.
Today Sunshine is in her forever home, healthy, happy, and well-loved. And it's all thanks to people like Caron and Julie, rescue groups like SOS and Pause for Paws, and a bighearted community. If only more dogs could be saved this way.
Natural Dog Name Considerations
Choosing a name is a long-term commitment. There are hundreds of natural names to be considered so how do you narrow it down to one? Start by selecting a few favorites and eliminating the rest. If you have too many choices you'll never get a unanimous decision.
Next, take a good look at your new fur buddy. Is there anything about them that makes you think of a natural element? Their breed, color or personality? Do they have ice blue eyes or a pink nose? What are your hopes and aspirations for them? Is your dog going to be a lapdog or will they be a working dog?
Try out a few names. Is it easy to say? Does it have a hard consonant in it so it will catch your dog's attention? A name that has one or two syllables usually works best because it's short enough for the dog to recall easily. Try yelling it as if you are at the dog park. Is it unique enough you won't have a dozen dogs running to you?
A name that is natural is normally clean and simple. If that sounds like what you want, then choosing a nature inspired name is just...well, natural.
