Modern Artist Inspired Dog Names

If you think you know what cool is, you have obviously not met Frank the Pug, the star (yes, we said it, the shining star) of a hit movie Men in Black. Frank the Pug is the epitome of awesome! He dresses smart, wears black sunglasses, and has a deep voice that would put most macho men to shame. He also bears the name of one of the most influential modern artists, Frank Auerbach, but more on him later.

Frank is awesome. Apart from being an extraterrestrial being taking the form of a Pug, he has quite the sense of humor as well! The first line Frank ever muttered in the first film of the Men in Black installment is “If you don’t like it, you can kiss my furry little butt”, in response to the criticism of his fabulous disguise. In Men in Black II, Frank is shown as a bit of a nuisance who cracks jokes during super secret missions, making fun of other MIB agents, and generally messing around. His rendition of “I will survive” is probably the best version of the song sang by a dog, and his version of “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baha Men, remains a fan favorite to this day. An interesting twist happens in Men in Black: Alien Crisis where Frank is actually a main character who works with Agent C and Agent P – Peter Delacour, an art thief.

Frank the Pug’s name twin, a celebrated artist Frank Auerbach, may not be as musically talented as Frank the Pug, but his talents surely do lie elsewhere. The Berlin-born artist studied at St Martin’s School of Art, Royal College of Art, and Borough Polytechnic in London, where he studied alongside Leon Kossoff, another fellow painter. Auerbach is considered a figurative painter with quite a chaotic approach to the depictions of life and the world, and his works are often considered chaotic. His use of thick paint allows him to express his view of the world, as he considers the artist’s duty to show the order in the chaotic world we live in. His main focuses are the scenes of London, as well as a few people he formed quite a close bond with, such as his wife, Julia Auerbach, Estella Olive West, and Yardley Mills. His urban landscapes are some of the most inventive renditions of London, and his technique of “painting on the go” can serve as an inspiration to rising artists who may not benefit from long thinking processes before they touch the canvas with a brush.
