Micronesia Dog Names

Bailey Olter was a Micronesian political figure, serving as the third President of the Federated States of Micronesia from 1991-1996. When choosing a spotlight dog, we took the name of Bailey Olter and researched dogs with the same Micronesian name. Bailey is also the name of several well-known pups on social media. For example, a formerly homeless man named Andy and his dog, Bailey, were featured in a video produced by Channel 4 News in London and posted on Facebook. Apparently, Andy purchased the pup from a beggar on the street when he was only four weeks old. The pooch had been given valium so he would not cry out for his mother. Andy helped the dog get off of the drugs and weaned him. Since Bailey came into his life, Andy stated that he has not touched a class A drug, after having been addicted to cocaine and heroin for 15 years. Andy had considered suicide, even standing on the edge of a bridge with his dog. Ultimately, Bailey saved Andy’s life when he realized that he should not be the one to choose when his dog’s time is up. Bailey does more than just provide companionship; he helps carry groceries and assists Andy in connecting with other people. According to Andy, he has met many people through Bailey. The pair were able to move into temporary housing together.

Another dog named Bailey is lending a helping paw. A two-year-old Golden Retriever named Bailey is the first therapy dog at the Maricopa Police Department, where he is able to be there for those who have just gone through a traumatic event. Bailey’s handlers, Cathy and Chip McCann explain that “the idea is to go to somebody and let them relax and calm down” and that “he can help children and adults”. The McCanns became volunteers with the department and then began the process to have Bailey volunteer as well. The pup has his own MPD volunteer badge that he wears on his collar. Bailey is experienced in emotional support, making regular visits to doctors, nurses and patients at Chandler Regional Medical Center. Bailey works through the Victim’s Advocate Program at MPD; if an officer feels that Bailey can be helpful to someone, the officer will call MPD Community Programs Manager Mary Witkofsky. She will then call the McCanns to request their assistance. Situations where Bailey can expect calls are when the victims are children, or for those who have experienced domestic violence, for example. To become a therapy dog, Bailey went to training school to learn basic commands; he then when to school to learn how to greet and interact with people.
