Frida

Frida is the name of a well-known Mexican painter, but did you know it is also the name of a now-famous Mexican rescue dog? After the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico City on September 19, 2017, the Mexican navy was deployed to help with disaster relief efforts. Frida, the Labrador Retriever, is a member of the canine unit of the Mexican navy. Frida reportedly helped to save over 52 lives in the wake of the earthquake and her heroism was recognized by Mexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto. Subsequently, she received viral fame as a result of her heroic efforts. That’s a massive accomplishment for a 7-year-old!

Frida was undoubtedly named for the painter of the same name, who was a native of Mexico City. The original Frida lived from 1907 – 1954 and was known for her artwork which was inspired by Mexican popular and folk culture. She was a member of the communist party, and her paintings often included nods to her political leanings. She lived a difficult life, struggling constantly with illness and physical ailments related to injuries she suffered in her youth. She also struggled to escape the shadow of her famous husband, Diego Rivera. Since her death, she has become highly revered throughout Mexico and the world as a figure of feminism and indigenous Mexican culture. Her former home, La Casa Azul, is a popular museum in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City, there is also a nearby park named after her.

Frida wasn’t the only dog deployed the help with earthquake relief. She was joined by several of her fellow canine members of the Mexican navy, as well as teams of working dogs from other countries. A team of dogs from the Canadian Search and Disaster Dog Association in Alberta, Canada flew to Mexico City to help as well. This group of dogs, consisting of Border Collies, Labradors, and Retrievers, worked in teams of 3 to find and uncover earthquake victims. Isn’t it incredible what dogs can do?
