Introduction
Melbourne Dog Names in Pop Culture
Red Dog was based on real events in 1979, when a dog roamed the Australian outback looking for his master. Unbeknown to the dog, his master had suffered an accident whilst riding home on his motorbike. He had run into a kangaroo in the dark country road. Sadly he did not survive the accident. But Red Dog waited for three days where his master had told him to wait, then he decided to go and find him. The movie shows the Kelpie Cattle Dog cross travelling throughout the outback only to return many years later to where he had started. The plot is about how this devoted dog affected the lives of the people he encountered. It is a bit of a tear jerker, but really goes to show how far a dog will go to be loyal to his master. Red Dog is a great name, it is simple but very descriptive and right to the point. While he travelled, people assigned various names to him in passing, but Red Dog was the one that most people knew him by. A statue was made of this dog and remains as a tourist attraction in the town of Damper, where it all began. It may not have been Melbourne, but Australians were united regarding what a great dog Red Dog was, and how he should be honored for his outstanding loyalty. The dog playing Red Dog in the movie was a dog called Koko.
An incident that shows how much dogs mean to their Melbourne owners occurred just days ago when a father risked his own life to save his family's beloved dog from a house fire in the suburb of Parkdale. The father (Michael) awoke to smell smoke and heard loud bangs coming from the ceiling in his home. Frantically he got the family out then realised their 17-year old Maltese dog Lucy was still upstairs. As she is both deaf and partially blind, as well as suffering arthritis, it meant the she couldn't get herself out of the house. Rushing back into the home, Michael managed to save their precious small dog, who was grateful to be with the family again. Young daughter Hannah commented on how important their dog was, and it was a happy ending.
Melbourne Dog Name Considerations
When looking for dog names, think outside the box and try to look in some areas you may not have considered. Australia, including Melbourne, can offer such ideas. When naming your dog you don't need to stick to the ordinary - think restaurants, landscape, the performing arts and wildlife. Melbourne names can also be inspired when one thinks of bodies of water like the Yarra River, sports, festivals, and landmarks.
Your new canine addition, depending on the breed or color, can suit a Melbourne name well. How about his coat? Is he furry and reminds you of Australian wildlife? Is he cuddly looking like a koala? Are his eyes blue like the wide open sky? Is his energy boundless? These things can all be considered when thinking of a Melbourne name for your dog.
