Introduction
Mega Man, also known as Rocketman, is a video game franchise created by Capcom back in 1987. The games cover an array of genres, from fighting to platforming, RPG to third-person shooters. Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), it's long-stayed with every gamer of the era, marking a vivid moment in the world of video games, all the way back when consoles were quickly killing off arcades. And it shouldn't be a surprise: there are over 50 games on multiple systems. By March of 2015, the franchise as a whole had sold 30 million copies worldwide. Talk about iconic!
Mega Man Dog Names in Pop Culture
Mega Man's faithful companion is his robotic dog, Rush. Created by Dr. Light to help Mega Man , Rush made his grand debut in Mega Man 3. He was able to transform into a hoverboard, submarine and coil. Ever since then, however, he's gone through several changes. It's not too surprising considering this is a very old series that spans over 50 games. The Rush Coil and Rush jets still appeared in several of the games after his debut, but the coil was renamed New Rush Coil in Mega Man 5.
Another massive change came in Mega Man 6, when Rush gained the ability to fuse with Mega Man to turn him into Power Mega Man, also referred to as Jet Mega Man. In Mega Man 7, the jet and coil returned, but he also had Rush Search, an item detection mode that came in handy during adventures. By Mega Man 8, he had four new abilities. The most noteworthy one was Rush's ability to transform into a motorcycle, which is pretty awesome. He also had some handy healing abilities.
To summarize his abilities, there's too many of them to count, and they all change game by game. In some, he can turn into a rideable Rush Drill, such as the one used in Marvel vs. Capcom and its sequel. This is where Rush turns into an enclosed drill machine that runs into enemies. Obviously, Mega Man is invincible when he's in the Rush Drill, which makes this particular ability one of the many favorites.
But what about Rush as a dog? We've covered what he can do as a robotic dog, but... what makes Rush really likable? For starters, he is represented in the animated series as a helpful, yet funny dog. He serves as transportation, but also eats Battery Biscuits – his energy source. He also has a speech impediment where he pronounces words with an excess use of "R." In case you're already thinking it, they definitely used Scooby Doo as an influence with the rough English, love of treats (Battery Biscuits vs. Scooby Snacks), and goofy antics.
Yes, Rush was and still is every Mega Man fan's favorite robotic dog. He is not only talented, and capable of meeting pretty much every need or want of Mega Man's in every possible dangerous situation, he's also lovable. He may be robotic, but he's a warm-hearted dog underneath it all. One that's loyal to the end.
Mega Man Dog Name Considerations
Whenever you're naming a pet, it can seem like there's just too much to consider. Too many name options, too many suggestions from people. And when you haven't even rescued the dog from the shelter yet, you don't have basic information like breed, gender, or appearance.
It's only the people who choose to adopt through breeders that can really plan, but that's not something many want to do. It's easy to get overwhelmed, understandably so. You want your dog to have the perfect name, and the perfect life to match.
To achieve this, start by starting over. Throw out suggestions and any ideas that didn't resonate with you immediately. No "maybe" names. Then, consider what you do know about the dog, if anything. Write it down, and keep it in mind for future reference.
Finally, list down the names that stand out to you right from the start. Names that make memories flood back to mind. Names of your favorite characters, or locations. Gathering all of these solid options, and then matching them up with whatever you do know about the dog makes the process not only much simpler, but fun. Because that's what it should be: fun to do!
