Introduction
Meet the Robinsons Dog Names in Pop Culture
Captain Lewis purchased Seaman in 1803. In August of that same year, the crew left for the Pacific Coast. Seaman was constantly at Lewis' side. Lewis wrote of the various adventures that the crew encountered, and he often spoke of his dog in these journals. In one entry, Lewis spoke of the mosquitoes. He claimed that both he and Seaman were "tortured" by the pests, stating that "my dog even howls with the torture he experiences from them." At one point, Indians stole Seaman. Lewis was so traumatized by this that he threatened to send armed men in to obliterate the thieves. However, negotiations took place and an agreement was made. Seaman was returned to Merriweather Lewis with no loss of life on either side.
Lewis was so fond of Seaman that he named places in honor of the dog. In Montana, a tributary of the Blackfoot River is known as "Seaman's Creek." (The name has since been changed to Monture Creek.)
Several monuments have been erected in Seaman's honor and memory. There are at least ten total statues honoring Seaman across Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa. A museum in Virginia holds a collar that belonged to Seaman. The inscription, no doubt made by Merriweather Lewis, reads: "The greatest traveller of my species. My name is SEAMAN, the dog of captain Merriweather Lewis, whom I accompanied to the Pacific Ocean through the interior of the continent of North America." Seaman has also been immortalized in much literature and books describing the travels of Lewis and Clark.
