Introduction
The Mastino Napoletano is a dog breed native to Italy. The Italian breed, which is also called Neapolitan Mastiff (nicknamed “Neo”), is well-known for its fierce and menacing appearance. Mastino Napoletanos are descendants of war dogs during the ancient Romanian era. They were carefully tailored by Italian breeders to look as intimidating and serious-looking as possible. Neos are naturally massive and bulky from head to tail, which easily makes them one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world. While they are typically calm and quiet by nature, they are also smart, affectionate, and very protective of their family. They may have a fearsome image, but with ample training and early socialization, the Mastino Napoletano can be the ideal guard dog and companion.
Mastino Napoletano Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Mastino Napoletano is a very unique and striking dog breed; there is no other dog breed like it. But even though Neos are extraordinary, they are underappreciated when it comes to movies, TV shows, and literature. However, the Italian breed finally got its much deserved recognition after appearing in the Harry Potter films. Fans and followers of the Harry Potter film series remember the pets of Professor Hagrid, which include a Mastino Napoletano.
Professor Rubeus Hagrid is introduced in the first part of the franchise: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. A half-giant and one of the story’s major characters, Hagrid is adored and remembered by a lot of Potterheads mostly for his tireless loyalty to Dumbledore and Harry. He also owns a dog named Fang.
In the novels, Fang is described to be a boarhound or a Great Dane, but in the movie, Fang is played by a Mastino Napoletano. Hagrid’s pets are usually described as dangerous and aggressive, but Fang is the complete opposite. As a matter of fact, Fang is a “big softie,” as Hagrid likes to put it. He loves to drool and is very friendly towards other people, especially to Ron, Harry, and Hermione. But like a true Neo, Fang is a great and smart protector. Whenever someone attempts to attack and mess with Hagrid, he immediately goes into protector mode. Fang lives in Rubeus Hagrid’s hut and always keeps Hagrid and his trusted people company wherever they go.
Fang first made his appearance when Ron and Harry paid Professor Hagrid a visit after school. Fang welcomed the two first year students with barking and licking. He’s very fond of the first year students, and is affectionate and gentle towards them. In one scene, Fang accompanied Harry and Draco into the Forbidden Forest. He saw a figure wearing a hood and drinking unicorn blood, causing him to initially run away in fear but returns shortly after with Hagrid and Hermione. In another scene, Harry and Ron intends to visit Aragog and Fang once again accompanied Ron and Harry into the Forbidden Forest, nearly getting captured and eaten by the children of Aragog.
Fang was also present during the Second Wizarding War, where he helped protect Hagrid from attacks by the Ministry of Magic wizards. He also participated in the Battle of Hogwarts. After the battle, it was not mentioned whether or not Fang survived. However, it is assumed that he made it until the end of the story.
Apart from playing the role of Fang, the Italian breed hasn’t received any other significant roles in the movie industry. But, thanks to the immense popularity of Harry Potter franchise, the Mastino Napoletano will always be recognized and remembered by many.
Mastino Napoletano Dog Name Considerations
Choosing a name for your furbaby can be quite difficult, especially if you’re indecisive. But there are things that can make it easy, and one of them include familiarizing yourself with the history and personality of your dog. Neos are strong and fierce dogs. In the ancient Roman war, they were used as protection dogs. As a result, they are very protective of their owners and other people they trust. They weigh between 110 and 150 pounds and have a strong and powerful build. But in spite of their history, Neos are actually calm and relaxed most of the time. They only show signs of aggression whenever necessary. With those being said, it would be a good move to choose a name that fits the breed’s history and personality. Neos are war dogs for the Romans, so it would be fitting to name yours after Roman personalities such as emperors, empresses or even warriors.
It’s also important to note that a Mastino Napoletano is an Italian breed. Thus, you may prefer to choose a name that is of Italian origin. You’re also free to name your Neo after his or her characteristics and personalities. Since they are massive, powerful, smart, and known to be good protectors, choose a name that defines strength, intelligence, fortitude, and loyalty. If you don’t want to get too creative, you can choose to name your Neo after deities or other powerful men that share similar traits.
