Introduction
Marvel Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Happy works for Tony Stark for some time before he learns that Mr. Stark is indeed Iron Man. (As the comic timeline goes, it was approximately two years before Happy comes to this realization.) However, only a short time later, Harold is struck ill. It is at this point that Happy becomes superhuman. Stark instructs his people to treat the very ill Happy with cobalt, which causes Happy to mutate to a giant humanoid. This incarnation of Happy is often known as "Freak." Tony is able to reverse the affects of the cobalt on Happy, but, on occasion, he will mutate once again into the savage Freak. He remained an ally to Tony even though Mr. Stark's machine is what caused the transformation in Happy.
One dog who truly embodies the name Happy has a wonderful reason to be joyful. The television series 7th Heaven featured a family whose father was a pastor. While dealing with all the stresses that the profession involves, the pastor also deals with a young son who only wants a dog. He brings home a stray and names the dog Happy. At first, because Happy is a shaggy Terrier mix, the family does not notice that their new pooch is expecting. The little boy occupies himself with keeping the puppies a secret from his parents, however, the family accepts Happy and her pups (who will be placed in good homes over the course of the next few shows).
Happy was also the name of the dog who played "Happy" on the 7th Heaven series. Like the fictional Happy, the real Terrier mix who portrayed the pup is also named Happy. The real Happy also spent some time outside of a loving home. In fact, Happy was adopted from a shelter by trainer Shawn Webber, who prepared Happy for working on television.
Marvel Inspired Dog Name Considerations
First, dogs that are slated for some type of service might be most suited to carry a superhero's moniker. German Shepherds are often used in military and police work. Belgian Malinois are often used as "drug dogs" or are otherwise companions for police officers. These dogs are often quite heroic; they are known to be fearless in the face of danger. Some police dogs are anxious to participate in work alongside their human handlers. From time to time, these heroic animals give their lives in order to protect their fellow police officers (and, often, their handlers will have memorial services for those dogs who are so brave).
The Labrador Retriever is a dog that is often associated with working as a service dog. Golden Retrievers also work with the blind as service dogs. Sometimes these breeds are used as therapy dogs for hospitalized patients, particularly for children. Labs and Goldies are particularly good with young children. They are patient, and they seem to know that the children they visit are sometimes very sick. These service dogs are particularly suited for a heroic moniker due to their honorable characters.
