Bella

Bella Flores is a well-known actress from Manila. She began acting when she was 21 and often played villainous characters. Bella is also the name of a fictional dog in the film “A Dog’s Way Home”, which is adapted from a novel written by W. Bruce Cameron. Bella, who is half Pit Bull, must make a difficult journey. The pup is played by a real-life canine and has the voice of Bryce Dallas Howard. During her journey, Bella “adopts” a young cougar (a C.G.I. creation) and the two of them fend off wolves on multiple occasions.

Bella is also the name of a therapy dog and subject of the book, “Joy Unleashed: The Story of Bella, the Unlikely Therapy Dog”. In 2007, Mary Eldergill, who was a volunteer with Amigos de Los Animales, found a group of newborn puppies on Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico. Mary took the pups in and rehabilitated them; three months later the dogs flew to Newark, New Jersey to find their forever homes. One of the pups, named Bella, was adopted by Jean Baur and her husband and she moved into their home in Pennsylvania. Just as Jean signed Bella up for classes to become a certified therapy dog, she lost her job. At sixty-five years old, working with Bella as a therapy dog gave Jean hope and a new purpose.

When Jean and Bella moved to Connecticut, Bella began visiting nursing homes, as well as elementary schools, local hospitals and cancer centers. After meeting Bella, an Alzheimer's patient smiled again after Bella took a treat from her. Bella made friends with a six-year old boy with autism who had been very afraid of dogs before meeting her. A disabled hospital patient was withdrawn and not communicating until Bella jumped into his bed and encouraged him to open up. The efforts of Jean and Bella have helped countless people overcome the challenges that they face. As Jean writes, these dogs are “ambassadors of exuberance”.

Another pup named Bella received media attention after she was reunited with her family after being gone for almost three years and found about 1200 miles from home. A Maltese-Pomeranian mix, Bella disappeared from outside the law office of her owner in Fort Lauderdale and was found in Paterson, New Jersey. Fortunately, Bella had a microchip and when she was found wandering the streets in New Jersey and brought to Animal Control, she was able to be reconnected with her owners. It is not clear how Bella got to New Jersey.
