Introduction
Officially the Republic of Malawi, Malawi is a landlocked country located in southeast Africa with the nickname “the Warm Heart of Africa”. Bordering Malawi is Zambia (to the northwest), Tanzania (to the northeast) and Mozambique (to the east, south and west). Malawi’s population is mainly rural and diverse, including native peoples, Asians and Europeans with a variety of religious beliefs held. A third of the country's area is made up of Lake Malawi and the country includes mountains and highlands.
Taking a closer look at Malawi will bring numerous name opportunities to your attention, one of which may be just what you are looking for your canine companion.
Malawi Dog Names In Pop Culture
There are some households, whether in Malawi or elsewhere, struggle with the cost of medical treatment for their pets. Veterinary care is typically not cheap and for families that are struggling, it is often out of reach. Fortunately, there are groups that are willing to assist pets in need. For example, Worldwide Veterinary Service has a team in Blantyre, Malawi that offers treatments to animals that are living in the poorest communities, where owners struggle to afford treatment for their pets. They also rescue animals that are injured as well as who have been abandoned. One memorable patient in Malawi is Tiger.
Tiger was struggling with a TVT (transmissible venereal tumor). This is a cancerous mass that can develop during the time that dogs are mating. It is easily spread between dogs, particularly if it is not treated. Unfortunately, the tumor spread to Tiger's eyes, which greatly impacted his sight and result in blindness. Tiger is a member of a loving family and his owners were understandably very worried and were concerned for his survival. Fortunately, the veterinarians of Worldwide Veterinary Service were able to provide treatment for Tiger. After three weeks, the pup had his eyesight, as well as his health, back.
A stray dog named Madidi also received some media attention. Anthony Joynes is an RSPCA inspection who works on one of the toughest animal cruelty beats in Britain. Joynes and charity vet Riaz Rehmu flew to Malawi on a mission to face the rabies epidemic that is leading to the death of over 500 people in the country annually. Their visit was filmed for The Dog Rescuers show. During their visit, they were able to vaccinate about 250 dogs against rabies; they also saved a dog within just a few hours of arriving in the country. As they drove to the hotel, they saw a stray golden retriever-type dog who was injured. It was clear that the pup needed medical treatment. According to Joynes, the dog did not appear alert and was just lying on the side of the road. They were able to get him into the van and took him for treatment. The dog was named Madidi, after the hotel where the rescuers were staying and he received treatment for a chronic leg problem as well as a tick infestation. The pup was recovering and the plan was to find him a new home.
Malawi Dog Name Considerations
Just how do you go about choosing the right name for your canine pal? Some people know the name for their new pooch before they even meet the dog. For others, deciding on a name is a lot more challenging. If you are having a hard time choosing a name for your pup, rest assured that you are not alone. It is understandable that you want to choose what feels like the right name for your pet. After all, you will be calling the name that you decide on many times a day for years to come.
If you are looking for ideas for a unique name for your pup, spend some time exploring (virtually) a country that is interesting to you. Take Malawi, for example. This landlocked country in southeastern Africa offers unique foods, a diverse population and a beautiful landscape. By taking a closer look, you are sure to come across potential names for your pooch that will be unique and will remind you of a place that has meaning to you.
