She was chained up outside, living unsheltered on a patch of dirt, and her owner unwilling to either give the dog the care and attention that she needed or to give her up to a more suitable home. Fieldworkers tried to improve Miss Willie’s life as much as they were able, bringing extra food, ensuring that her water bowl was full, and even providing her with toys to play with and a doghouse filled with straw to help keep her warm. She was always happy to see them and greeted human visitors with an eagerly wagging tail, but when Jes Cochran, a worker who had developed a special bond with the pooch, stopped by one day in the summer of 2018, she discovered that Willie was extremely weak and lethargic. The owner was once again contacted regarding the state of her chained canine, and this time Miss Willie was surrendered to PETA. Jes rushed her to a nearby veterinarian, but the news was grim. Miss Willie was suffering from the end stages of a severe heartworm infestation and was not expected to survive the night. The veterinarian did what they could and drained her lungs of fluid, and while it was enough that she was feeling a bit better, it only extended her prognosis by a week or two.

Jes decided that the only thing she could do was to make Miss Willie’s last days the best that she could ever have imagined, so she took the dog home, and wrote up a bucket list for her. She slept in a bed, inside a warm house, for her last weeks, and was treated to a plethora of new experiences. Miss Willie, as predicted, did not survive her illnesses for very long and she died just sixteen days after being surrendered to Jes. In those sixteen days, she experienced as much joy as Jes and the charity could provide; she attended a birthday bash just for her, complete with dog-safe cake, she ate pizza and burritos, rode in a canoe, visited the beach, got a relaxing massage at a spa, and even got to visit the fire department to thank firefighters for their service.
