Introduction
Lord of the Flies Dog Names in Pop Culture
Many of us grew up watching The Muppets. Jim Henson's lovable bunch of puppets includes notable characters such as Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and Fozzy. One of the more overlooked but highly important muppets is the resident pianist, Rowlf the Dog. (Rowlf is pronounced the same as Ralph; it was creator Jim Henson's play on words imitating the sound some dogs make.)
Rowlf is a mixed breed dog. He is chubby, and his fur is curly (often corkscrewed in nature). Some say that Rowlf is part-Corgi, but this has not been clarified. Generally, Rowlf is quite calm, but he is known for his dry humor and quick wit. Rowlf is a fan of Beethoven, but he loves all Classical music in general. Most don't know that Rowlf is the first Muppet that was a recurring Henson character on The Jimmy Dean Show. Prior to that, Rowlf was featured in a commercial for Purina dog food (1962). This commercial aired chiefly in Canada, and Rowlf is accompanied by another muppet Baskerville the Hound. When Rowlf was appearing on The Jimmy Dean Show each week, he received at least two thousand fan letters per episode. Rowlf also made appearances on Sesame Street and numerous other kid-friendly shows.
Lord of the Flies Dog Name Considerations
Although there are no dog breeds mentioned in the novel, we can relate the behavior of the boys to that of a pack of dogs. Going back to the ancestors of our domesticated dogs, the wolf pack established one leader - an Alpha, usually a male - and the other dogs fell in line behind him. Jack is reminiscent of a young male who wishes to challenge an older Alpha male in the wolf pack. Therefore, any dog breed would be suited to a name from William Golding's Lord of the Flies. You could consider personality and choose a character that reminds you of your pup or has traits that you would like to instill in your new furry addition.
