Introduction
Have you ever been to Peru, or, looked it up on the internet? If so, you’ll find Lima is the capital of the Republic of Peru. The region has quite a diverse range of climates, with lush tropical Amazon rainforests in the north, cold temperatures resulting from the various elevations of the mountains, as well as the Humboldt Current that brings colder temps to the Pacific coastal areas of the country. The climate conditions and unusual flora and fauna of the countryside make utilizing this theme to name that new pup quite an educational process.
Lima Dog Names in Pop Culture
In 2008, the Republic of Peru, of which Lima is capital, almost made it to the top of the “mountain” of the over 340 different canine breeds in the world. They came close, “but no cigar,” as the saying goes when our pop culture spotlight almost made it to the United States White House! Here’s how all of that happened to Macchu Pichu (a name variation shared with Machu Picchu, the ancient Incan city located high in the Andes Mountains) in 2008:
Then President Barack Obama announced his interest in adopting a pet. As you can imagine, there were dozens of pets offered by the President’s friends, ambassadors, various politicians and such, including one from a Peruvian citizen named Claudia Galvez. Claudia was not only a Peruvian citizen, but she was also the head of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association, and she threw her hat (or pup) into the fray with her assertion that “Macchu Pichu was ready to live in the White House.” Her position further strengthened when President Obama announced that his daughter, Malia, suffered from allergies associated with certain canine breeds.
Macchu began to look better and better - why is that, you ask? Because he is a representative of the rare and singular species of canine indigenous to Peru called Perro Calato. This dog breed is the “perfect dog” because they are hairless, therefore not carrying the problems associated with hair or fur such as fleas, wood ticks, shedding and staying clean. Additionally, this breed’s body temperature is higher than other dog breeds, alleged to have curative powers that date back to at least 300 B.C., back to pre-Incan cultures.
Getting back to Macchu’s story, even some of the most reputed news sources like Reuters and AP were in total agreement that the hypoallergenic traits made Macchu an optimal choice for the President’s family dog. AOL even ran a poll that revealed Macchu’s popularity for the job, but alas, Macchu Pichu lost the “election” when President Obama chose instead a Portuguese Water Dog whom he named “Bo.” While the rest is history, there is a nugget to be had in this story - while Macchu Pichu didn’t win the prize, he came to the top of the list - quite a feat for a breed that is one of the most singular in the world!
