Introduction
The Kuvasz is an ancient livestock and guard dog breed that is native to Hungary. Old Hungarian texts have mentioned the breed frequently, suggesting that it has been around for decades. Historically, the Kuvasz was bred to guard flocks and serves as guard dogs to royalty. Over the years, it has increasingly become a popular choice for a home pet. Its innate instinct to protect, however, is still present. In fact, it is highly protective of its family and is wary of strangers. But beneath its defensive demeanor, the Kuvasz also possesses intelligence and comical sense of humor that lasts well into the dog’s adulthood. These attributed make the Kuvasz an ideal family dog.
Kuvasz Dog Names in Pop Culture
Being a slightly uncommon breed, especially one that is not that well-known in the United States, there are very few pop culture references involving the Kuvasz. However, there are a handful of animated films where the breed plays a major character. One example was the episode from the old anthology television series called Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color. In season thirteen of the series, one of the episodes entitled The 101 Problems of Hercules featured a Kuvasz in the titular role. The story revolves around Hercules and two other dogs as they try to herd a flock on their own. This was one of the earliest films where the Kuvasz had a starring role.
One of the most memorable films where the Kuvasz was featured is the 1996 adventure film Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco, which is a sequel to the highly successful Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. In the sequel, the three original characters from the first film – namely Shadow (a Golden Retriever), Chance (an American Bulldog) and Sassy (a Himalayan cat) – go with their family on a trip to Canada. While at the airport in San Francisco, Chance panics when he mistakenly assumes that the airport employees were workers from the dog pound. This causes him and the other two animals to break free from their carriers and escape. The trio then find themselves lost in the streets of San Francisco. While trying to find their way back, they come across other dogs who initially want to eat Sassy. Fortunately, a gang of dogs scare the bullies away. Eventually, the animals start warming up to each other, with the stray dogs trying to assist the three pets in making their way across the Golden Gate Bridge and back home.
One of the members of the dog gang, Delilah, is a Kuvasz who was tasked to go after Chance because he got scared of the gang and ran off. Throughout the time they spend with each other, Chance starts to fall for Delilah. During the time that Chance and Delilah were gone, the other members of the gang, along with Chance and Sassy, go through a series of incidents until all the animals eventually reunite. As the film goes on, other mishaps occur, including Chance almost being dog-napped and the group being ambushed by the bully dogs from earlier in the film. Ultimately, the gang leads the trio across the bridge and back to their owners. Delilah also decides to come with Chance and his family agrees to let her stay.
Fans of the film found the romance between Chance and Delilah a delightful addition. It also made viewers of the film aware of the Kuvasz and helped boost its status in the United States.
Kuvasz Dog Name Considerations
When it comes to naming dogs in general, it is important to choose a name that both you and your dog will like. There are lots of dog owners who name their dogs after currently trending pop culture references (e.g. memes, movies). While this may seem like a witty move at present, such trends will fade over time. By then, it would be almost impossible to rename your dog, especially once you’ve gotten used to it.
The Kuvasz is a lovely dog with some unique qualities. As such, owners of the breed have to award their pooch with a name that goes well with their dog’s uniqueness. One of the most distinguishing features of the Kuvasz is its white, fluffy coat. They were intentionally bred to turn out light-colored, in order for shepherds to easily differentiate the dog from other preys. Hence, it would be a good move to choose a name that represents the color white.
Another consideration for naming your Kuvasz dog is the breed’s native country. Being a Hungarian breed, it is appropriate to choose an eloquent Hungarian name. You may also choose a Hungarian word, fictional character or any other name that relates to the culture of Hungary.
