Kosovo Dog Names

A U.S. Department of State employee, Sally Nist was experiencing puppy withdrawal when having to spend a month away from her pup, a Border Terrier, during her time being stationed in Kosovo. Nist encountered a street dog near the compound where she was staying and one rainy night came home to see that the dog, who she called Brownie, was sitting in front of her apartment. Nist encouraged the pup to come inside, though Brownie balked and ran into the darkness. Undeterred, Nist bought dog food, in the hopes of encouraging Brownie to come inside. Though several days passed before Nist saw the pup again, she had already decided to adopt the dog and take her to the United States. Unfortunately, Brownie’s tail was gangrenous and had to be amputated. Nist covered the cost of her vet bills and began planning to take her home. Since her assignment in Kosovo ended when Brownie was still recovering, Nist asked a colleague to keep her until she returned to health and could travel. Once home in Virginia Nist received a surprising email; Brownie appeared to be pregnant! Six weeks after being rescued, Brownie arrived at her new home. Just ten days later, she gave birth to five healthy puppies! Once old enough, the puppies found new homes and Nist continued working with Brownie who was dog-aggressive as a result of living on the streets. Fortunately, Brownie did well in obedience training and learned quickly, eventually participating in competitions!

Another dog from Kosovo who has received a lot of attention is Ray, a two-year-old hound mix. Ray lived on the streets of Kosovo until he came to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. Shelter staff apparently saw a video of Ray on Kosovo Pet Rescue’s Facebook page, begging for assistance and wanted to help him, feeling confident that they could make a difference in his life. Ray successfully made the trip from Kosovo to Annapolis with a stop in Germany and it was found that he has a significant case of heartworm, something he would not have survived without treatment. Ray apparently lived on the streets of Kosovo as a stray, made even more difficult by his being unable to see. The goal for Ray is to leave the shelter for a foster home, and ultimately be adopted.
