Kiki's Delivery Service Dog Names

His name is Jeff. And in a world full of witches and talking cats, he manages to stand out despite being an ordinary dog. Jeff is a very laid back dog (that a number of fans believe to be a Saint Bernard) who lives with a young boy named Ket and his mother. Some folks might think that Jeff is a lazy dog - after all most of his screen time is spent laying down with a nonplussed expression on his face. But we don't necessarily see it that way - we think that Jeff has just learned to take things easy and not sweat the small stuff. Considering that Jeff is a normal dog in a world where folks can fly around the sky on brooms, we think he's got the right idea.

As a result of leading a fairly unadventurous life, Jeff doesn't do much in the film. His role is very small when compared to characters like Kiki, Tombo, or even Kiki's pet cat Jiji. In fact, Jeff's most prominent scene is shared with Jiji; during the latter half of the film, Jiji is separated from Kiki and finds himself face to face with Jeff. Now up until this point, Jiji and Jeff never really had an opportunity to get to know one another. It's also worth mentioning that Jiji was fairly wary of Jeff, as he thought the dog would try to harm him the first chance he got. 

To Jiji's surprise, Jeff not only didn't harm him but helped him a great deal in his time of need. Rather than cast Jiji off to the wolves and let chance decide the outcome, Jeff kept Jiji sheltered and safe until Kiki was able to successfully reunite with her cat. As a result, Jiji came to respect Jeff immensely and endeavored to change his outlook on dogs as a whole. Jeff was happy to help, but you probably wouldn't be able to tell as he just got back to doing his thing after he knew that Jiji was safe and sound. 

A number of Hayao Miyazaki fans have taken to naming their pets, children, and personal possessions after characters from Studio Ghibli films as a way to show their love for these timeless films. While Jeff may not be the most unique sounding name out there, you should consider naming your dog after this Studio Ghibli character not for his heroism but for his laid back, "go with the flow" demeanor.
