Introduction
The capital and largest city in Afghanistan, Kabul is located in the eastern part of the country. Kabul is also a municipality and forms part of the greater Kabul Province. The city sits high in a narrow valley between the Hindu Kush mountains along the Kabul River at about 5,873 feet above sea level. Kabul is known for its gardens, bazaars and palaces. As of 2012, Kabul, which is divided into 22 districts, was the fifth fastest growing city in the world. Kabul has a lot to offer, including a myriad of unique name possibilities, one of which may be perfect for your pup.
Kabul Dog Names In Pop Culture
Sergeant Pen Farthing was deployed in the remote village of Now Zad in Afghanistan when he met a stray dog who got helped him get through the seven months that he was there. When it was time for him to return home to England, the Royal Marine officer put together a stealth operation in order to smuggle the pup, who he called Nowzad, out of Helmand province to Kabul and from there to England.
To Farthing, leaving the dog behind in the conflict was not an option. According to Farthing, “I’d just sit there and stroke the top of his head and I could pretend I was not in Afghanistan”. Upon returning to England, Farthing decided to provide the assistance he received to other soldiers. He developed a charity called Nowzad (after the first dog) that is responsible for the operations of Afghanistan’s first dog and cat shelter. The charity also operates a veterinary clinic in Kabul.
Often, dogs and cats wander into combat outposts where coalition troops develop relationships with them and care about their health. In an annual report to the U.K. Charity Commission, Nowzad stated that it has arranged for vaccination, neutering and travel for over 1,000 dogs to seven countries. For example, Isabelle Allard, a retired naval officer, adopted Thor, one of four dogs that lived at the combat post where she was stationed in Masum Ghar during her deployment in 2010. Allard contacted Nowzad, after orders were given to destroy all stray animals. Nowzad coordinated the pick-up and transport of the dog by bus to Kabul. While Allard cared for the pup on base, Thor did his share, protecting the base from jackals and hyenas, as well as being there for the soldiers.
A civilian military contractor named Onne de Boer has taken in four rescue dogs from Afghanistan. De Boer explains that “this is a way that we can help those animals, a way that we can help the soldiers who decide to try and rescue an animal from Afghanistan and give those cats and dogs a better life”.
Getting the dogs to their new home is complicated and expensive and Nowzad runs almost completely on donations. The experience is a win-win; the dogs find homes and a better quality of life and the soldiers benefit from the companionship of a friend who got them through a very stressful experience.
Kabul Dog Name Considerations
When choosing a name for your new dog seems impossible, you may feel like throwing in the towel. It turns out, however, that you might just need some inspiration. Fortunately, there are many places to find that inspiration and all you need to do is pick a city or country that interests you to get started.
It is likely you are hoping for a name that has some meaning for you. A good way to find such a name is to think of a place that piques your curiosity. Once you have that place in mind, you can take some time to virtually explore it. Take the city of Kabul, for example. Located among the Hindu Kush mountains, in eastern Afghanistan, the city has a lot to offer. During your virtual tour, take a closer look at the communities, neighborhoods, nature opportunities, things to do and well-known people found here.
If you are looking for a catchy name, consider Mazang, the name of a hillside settlement in Kabul. Are you interested in the flavors of the region? Mantu is a fun moniker which is the name of meat-filled dumplings popular in Kabul.
