Jupiter's Legacy Inspired Dog Names

The three-headed watchdog of the Greek Underworld is the son of two terrifying monsters - Typhon the Titan and the Echidna. The Echidna's parentage is something of a mystery that's hotly debated among Greek Mythology scribes, even to this day. All that matters is that she's a snake lady that has a penchant for eating people on a whim. Typhon, on the other hand, is a distant relative of the Olympian Gods. This familial tie makes it all the more tragic that Typhon tried to kill all of them eons ago, during a great war known as the Titanomachy. 

We could spend ages talking about the Titanomachy, but we want to get back to discussing Cerberus, so we'll summarize it instead. Long story short, Typhon was created by Mother Earth to kill her grandchildren - the Olympian Gods. Typhon sired a bunch of monsters with Echidna to help him, but he was defeated before they grew old enough to aid their Father. In the aftermath of the Titanomachy, the Olympians banished most of Typhon's children while keeping some of the less creepy ones around. Hades more or less called dibs on Cerberus, nobody else protested, and the rest is history. Since that day, Cerberus and Hades have presided over the Greek Underworld as a deadly duo.

Cerberus has had run-ins with famous Greek heroes like Herakles (Hercules is his Roman name,) Orpheus, and Theseus. In contemporary media, Cerberus is often made out as a mean or even evil dog. We don't think that's the case; Cerberus is a guard dog that's merely doing his job. Despite his admittedly terrifying appearance, Cerberus doesn't do anything to offend others who don't anger him. Though Cerberus hasn't appeared in Jupiter's Legacy, as of this writing, we imagine Mark Millar would depict him in a neutral light if Hades' Hound ever did show up.
