The only remaining living 10^th dan judoka promoted by Kodokan were granted their rank together, on January 8^th, 2006. Jim the Wonder Dog

Jim Bergman was an American judoka, one of the rare ones promoted to the 10^th dan just recently, in January of 2018. Jim’s accomplishments are admirable, and he certainly did a lot that he can be proud of, but what he can also boast of is the fact that he has the same name as another famous person, well, furry person. Jim the Wonder Dog was a truly wondrous dog who could do many things that are still inexplicable, mysterious, but fascinating.

Jim the Wonder Dog was born in 1925 and lived until 1937, and he was a Llewellin Setter, and allegedly had some remarkable abilities. He could predict the sex of an unborn child, and he also predicted the winner of the Kentucky Derby. He earned his nickname in the 1930s when he showed off his abilities, leaving a lot of heads scratched in wonder at how exactly he does it. The psychologists from Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Missouri in Columbia performed a series of tests on Jim. Dr. Durant from the School of Veterinary Medicine, however, was the one to conduct the most detailed tests in public so that everyone can be a witness. He stated that Jim “possessed an occult power that might never come again to a dog in many generations.”

The test showed that Jim could guess the sex of an unborn baby, understand foreign languages and answer to orders in them, even though his owner only spoke English and no other languages, not only with him but in general. Jim was also able to guess the winner of the Kentucky Derby, not once, not twice, not even three times – he managed to pick the winner for seven years in a row! In the 1936 World Series, when the New York Yankees played against the New York Giants, Jim the Wonder Dog guessed that the Yankees would win, and guess what, they did!

A Memorial Garden for Jim the Wonder Dog was built in Marshall in Missouri, where he actually died. The park was opened in May of 1999, and it features a beautiful garden and the big statue of Jim, sculpted by Andy Davis out of bronze. Even though Jim is not the only dog who has a dedicated statue, he is probably the only one who has one in Missouri, and moreover, in such a beautiful park that everyone can visit and learn about Jim’s remarkable, almost supernatural abilities.
