A prominent figure in many French Christian sects, Saint Guinefort is perhaps the only dog to have ever been elevated to such an esteemed rank in all of Judeo-Christian legend. To this day, Saint Guinefort is regarded as a Patron Saint who presides over infants. Though the Catholic Church hasn't officially honored Saint Guinefort, his visage can still be found on a number of items and artifacts in France.

Saint Guinefort's story is a somewhat well known folktale in the city of Lyon, France. The story goes that Saint Guinefort started life out as the loyal Greyhound of a knight who lived near Lyon. This knight loved Guinefort immensely and trusted the dog so much that he decided to let the dog watch over his infant son when he went out hunting one fateful day. The knight was right to entrust his son's life to the dog as a great terror would soon put the son in jeopardy.

A viper wandered into the knight's home and made its way to his son's cot. Before the beast could strike the baby, Guinefort intervened and demolished the serpent - their ensuing battle making an absolute mess of the baby's room. When the knight returned home from this hunt, saw the scene of the battle and was unable to find his son he assumed the worst; that Guinefort had gone rabid and ate his child. His fears were elevated when a bloodstained Guinefort walked into the room to greet his master.

In a flash of rage, the knight struck Guinefort down - assuming that his best friend had betrayed him. The knight began to cry for a moment, before realizing that he wasn't alone in his son's room. The knight wandered over to his son's flipped over cot and found his child, unscathed, crying the beneath it, as well as the viper's carcass. The knight realized that Guinefort had protected his son and immediately mourned the loss of his faithful pet. The knight buried Guinefort, made a shrine out of his grave, and told others of his dog's bravery. Guinefort was then revered as a Patron Saint of infants, with a number of miracles having been alleged to occur at the dog's grave.
