Introduction
JLA Inspired Dog Names In Pop Culture
The very first dog to ever be called Ace was a German Shepherd who first appeared all the way back in Batman #92. This was during the Silver Age of comics - the period that directly followed the Golden Age of comics and was host to a number of bizarre yet consistently creative tales. Ace first encountered Batman while the Caped Crusader and his ward Robin were trying to find a man who had been kidnapped by a group of gangsters. The hostage in question was Ace's original master, prompting the dog to take a vested interest in the case as well.
When Batman and Robin first encounter Ace, he's anxiously searching for a man by the name of John Wilker. Batman notices that the dog is quite gifted and intelligent - even beyond German Shepherd standards - and decides to take the dog along. Batman realizes that Ace has a very distinct star-shaped birthmark on his forehead. Thinking that the birthmark would potentially jeopardize Ace or John Wilker's safety, Batman outfits the dog with a black hood that hides his identity. Thus, Ace the Bat-Hound was born!
Another incarnation of Ace that's particularity noteworthy is the incarnation of the dog that debuted in Batman #462. This version of Ace wasn't a German Shepherd but rather resembled a type of Mastiff or Molosser. This Ace also didn't wear a mask - with the writers realizing that a dog didn't really have any need to hide his identity from the public. Originally intended to be a guide dog for a blind Native American man, Ace first makes Batman's acquaintance when the Dark Knight fights off a group of thugs that had just murdered Ace's old master. After Batman and Ace bring the criminals to justice, Bats adopts Ace into the family.
JLA Inspired Dog Name Considerations
The comic series that the JLA first debuted in can also be viewed as something of a time capsule for the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Dark Age of comic books was nearing its end, Superman had just been revived after previously being slain by Doomsday (even still rocking a mullet at this point,) and more upbeat stories were starting to make a comeback. The 126 issue JLA series that ran from January 1997 to April 2006 is evident of such - the stories featured within the JLA comics are all mostly upbeat and inspiring. If you read enough of these books and find yourself moved by them, you've just gained another reason to consider giving your dog a JLA inspired name.
For instance, do you have a tiny pup? Shrink would be an ideal name. Is your dog constantly on the lookout for a chase? Tag them with Huntress!
