Jeddah Dog Names

Jeddah dog names appear less often in pop culture, but there are a few less specific Saudi Arabian names. You can, therefore, give your dog a Jeddah name, but that tends to appear more generally in Saudi Arabia as a whole in pop culture. Two such dogs are Abu and Anwar.

In Saudi Arabian, Abu means father, but in different circumstances, it can also refer to different things. Abu can also mean mother and father, two fathers, or thy parents. It can also be an expression of praise, saying God is attributable, or the excellence of your father.

If you were to use Abu as a verb, you might be using it to explain that someone is a father, or that you adopt them as a father.

If you are referring to Abu as the dog in pop culture, he is a pooch that appears in the 1940s Technicolor Arabian fantasy British film called The Thief of Bagdad. The mixed breed dog is into which Jaffar, an evil character, turns a thief.

The movie then follows the young thief, the King of Bagdad, and a genie called Dijinn in a flurry of excitement. Mimicking the style of Arabian Nights, the backstory of the movie also appears in well-executed flashbacks. Due to the outbreak of the war, the British movie was filmed in California, United States.

Another dog and Jeddah name that appears prominently in Jeddah and pop culture is Anwar. As a Jeddah, Saudi Arabian name, Anwar means luminous or a collection of lights. The meaning can differ depending on whether the named person is a female or male.

The spelling can also differ as Anwer, Anwaar, Anvar, and Anouar are also acceptable spellings of the name. It’s also an English transliteration of two Saudi Arabian or Arabic names and appears commonly throughout Jeddah and the greater Middle East.

The name also refers to Anwar, Sydney’s dog in I Love You Man, a 2009 film about someone with no friends who goes on “mandates” to find a best man for his wedding. Anwar is a Puggle - a hybrid mix of a Beagle and a Pug. The dog appears prominently throughout the film, but with great controversy.

The late President of Egypt’s daughter believes the filmmakers named the dog after her father, especially after the filmmaker tells Peter he thinks they look alike. The case lawyer asked the US embassy to apologize as in Saudi Arabia and surrounding areas, dogs are seen as unclean and the word is used as an insult.
