Istanbul Dog Names

Tarçın was killed in a hit and run accident in May of 2016. The driver going in the wrong direction left her in the street without so much as checking her condition. And in Istanbul, a country known for its love of animals, including all strays, didn't take too kindly to the whole situation. Moda residents and animal activists voiced their anger against the driver, and even promised to track him down and bring him to justice. 

Needless to say, the whole situation blew up, with residents feeling personally attacked by the hit and run. People who had never heard of the dog, didn't know the dog owner or anything, extended their condolences, and clearly stated in interviews that they felt bothered by what happened because they themselves were dog owners. They had put themselves in that situation and felt the pain of Tarçın's family. 

But rather than simply voice their condolences, rage, and support for the grieving family, people began reaching out to animal activists. This, of course, led to press coverage, protests, and further investigations, but still, the guilty party hasn't been found. Even now, two years later. The main problems are that the car in question entered a road the wrong way, so he was driving the entirely wrong direction. He could have run over children or mothers with strollers passing by, so it was unlucky that Tarçın was there when it happened.  

Three strangers who saw the accident immediately ran over to the dog and tried to lift her up. She was already dead. It's been said they exclaimed at the whole situation, a mixture of shock and anger. The man hadn't even stopped the car, turned back, or helped to pick up the body off the road. To this day, no one knows what intentions the driver had, all that is known is that he was going the wrong way, and clearly had no regard for an animal's life.  

Sennur Ulugönül, the dog owner was interviewed, of course. He described how Tarçın was afraid of thunder. She would try to run, but had knee problems that didn't allow her to walk all the way upstairs. So, she had a little spot by the front door that kept her warm, safe, and part of the family. 

Tarçın was 18-years-old and well-loved. Even in death, she is still remembered, with a statue and everything. Activists use her as a reminder to be kinder to other sentient life. To spread love and compassion, not pride. Tarçın may be gone, but she will always be remembered in Istanbul.
