Interview with the Vampire Dog Names

Interview with the Vampire, the 1976 novel by Anne Rice, sparked a new generation of New Orleans based vampire themes in popular culture and brought attention to the famed city and its dark and Gothic past.  Anne Rice's vampire universe, known as the Vampire Chronicles, is extensive and spans her more than five decade-long writing career.  She provides hours of reading entertainment for those interested in Gothic vampire horror stories with a touch of eroticism.  Many fans of Interview with the Vampire can express their appreciation of Anne Rice by naming their dog after one of the characters or a theme touched upon in the novels.  The vampires of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles come from a French background, either established in New Orleans or from the French Court, and many names have French meanings or ties to the culture.  One such name is Louis, short for the character Louis de Pointe du Lac, portrayed by Brad Pitt in the film adaptation. 

Today, Louis is a well-known dog fashion line for posh pups everywhere.  The fashion line includes dresses, shirts, pants, and ruffled collars.  Louis Dog knows that dressing your pooch up in clothing isn't for everyone, so they also offer designer collars and leashes as well as furniture, carriers, driving kits, and doggie spa items.  French-inspired dog pampering items made in designer quality may not seem like it's connected to the Gothic underworld of vampires but for Anne Rice vampires, who are often angelic and fair of hair, skin, and eyes, the Louis dog collection fits the theme to a tee.  

Famous dogs in pop culture don't have to have a French vampire name to fit the Interview with the Vampire theme.  Vampires, even Anne Rice's vampires, can be burned by the sun.  In both the book and the film adaptation, vampires Claudie and Madeleine suffer this fate and are turned to ash by the rising sun.  Instead, vampires must stay in the shadow, which is another exceptional name for a dog under this theme.

Shadow the dog, from the Disney film Homeward Bound, is an old and wise Golden Retriever dog who helps the tenacious Chase, an immature American Bulldog, and a spunky Himalayan cat named Sassy find their way back home after being separated from their family.  Shadow is not a reference to an Anne Rice vampire novel, but he is a famous pup bearing an Interview with the Vampire themed name.  In this movie, Shadow feels like he is Chance's guardian dog and tries to keep the young pup out of trouble as they make their way across the country.  The three friends run into a series of problems, including a mountain lion and a pack of stray dogs, and Shadow proves that old dogs can still hang with the young pups as he outruns and fends off the group's adversaries.
