Introduction
The Hungarian Kuvasz is an imposing breed with a snow white coat and massive body. They are livestock guardian dogs that can make loyal, tolerant companions. Because they are livestock guardians, they are not the best choice for every family. These dogs need a strong leader and consistent training. They are aloof and suspicious of strangers. A Hungarian Kuvasz will not warm up to strangers and it is difficult to re-home an adult Kuvasz. They are fiercely independent dogs and prefer to spend their time monitoring their territory. A Hungarian Kuvasz must start their training and socialization at an early age to ensure they can be controlled when they are full grown.
Hungarian Kuvasz Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Hungarian Kuvasz is gaining popularity within the United States, especially since being accepted into the American Kennel Club (AKC) as an official breed. People who are glued to their televisions during televised dog shows are familiar with this large, majestic white dog. Tanner, or Grand Champion Szumeria’s Wildwood Silver Six Pence, is the top winning Hungarian Kuvasz in the breed’s history. There is some discrepancy as to exactly how many Best in Show (BIS) and Best in Specialty Show (BISS) wins Tanner has won. The Kuvasz Club of America claims this hall of fame dog won 54 BIS and BISS, whereas his breeder’s website claims he won a total of 63 BIS and BISS. According to his breeder’s website, Tanner won 7 BISS and 56 all breed BIS. Tanner began his conformation show career in 2009 and he retired from the ring as a gold grand champion in 2016. He was inducted into the Kuvasz Club of America’s Hall of Fame as the top winning dog in conformation. Aside from the conformation ring, Tanner earned his Canine Good Citizenship title and became a Pet Partner Therapy Dog.
Tanner’s sire is Champion Szumeria’s Irish By Nature, or Dooley for short, and BISS Champion Szumeria’s One For The Money CD BN OAP OJP CGC TT COAA VOAA OD Pet Partner Therapy Dog, or Penny for short. Penny was also inducted into the Kuvasz Club of America’s Hall of Fame as a top producing dam. She was also inducted into the Hall of Fame for her work in Rally. During Tanner’s career, he earned over 200 working group firsts. He was ranked in the AKC’s Top Ten for all breeds in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Tanner was named the number two working dog in 2011 and 2012. He also holds the honor of being named the number one Hungarian Kuvasz of the Year, all systems, from 2009 to 2013. Tanner has even placed in the working group at the Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show. He was awarded the Kuvasz Club of America’s Conformation Performance Award, Conformation Outstanding Achievement Award, and Versatility Performance Award. In 2013, Tanner was named by the Kuvasz Club of America the Top Kuvasz of the Year in Versatility. Tanner was bred by Lyn Brady, Connie Townsend, Bea Page, and Clay Page. He is co-owned by Lynn Brady, Connie Townsend, Mercedes Vila, and Claudia Muir. Tanner retired from the conformation ring and has been used as a stud for selectively chosen females.
Hungarian Kuvasz Dog Name Considerations
The Hungarian Kuvasz is becoming more popular with not just farmers and ranchers, but with family homes. These dogs do not do well in apartments or in homes with small yards. They need room to roam and patrol their territory. The Hungarian Kuvasz is not the right dog for every family situation. They do require a person who knows how to properly train and socialize them. After deciding to bring home a Hungarian Kuvasz puppy, it will be time to look for a name that suits them.
Having originated in Hungary, you may begin your search by looking up Hungarian inspired names. Traditional Hungarian names such as Laszlo, Hunor, Reka, or Boroka would definitely show everyone who meets your new puppy where they came from and would make a good conversation starter. There are also names that have Hungarian roots but are more Americanized and easier to pronounce for everyone in the family such as Jakab, Alex, Lili, or Zoe. Do not settle on a name for your new Hungarian Kuvasz until you have had time to get to know them, many times their personality will help you find the perfect name. If the new puppy is a family pet, have everyone in the family become involved in picking a name.
