Introduction
While the Hovawart may sound like a creature out of a Harry Potter novel, they are really a large German livestock guardian dog that can rival any other German dog breed in the stubbornness department. The Hovawart is the type of dog that requires a job to complete each day, or they will create things to do to keep themselves occupied. It takes a patient and consistent person to own and train a Hovawart. The Hovawart is not the typical livestock guardian dog; they do not enjoy spending hours on their own faithfully guarding their flock and property. Instead, they enjoy spending time with their family doing tasks or playing games. The Hovawart does not do well in a kennel setting and will quickly become depressed if kenneled alone for long periods of time.
Hovawart Dog Names in Pop Culture
There may not be a large population of Hovawarts residing within North America, but the ones that are have made dog enthusiasts sit up and take notice of their achievements. There are several Hovawarts participating in search and rescue work and many more showing their intelligence in obedience trials and other dog sports. The Hovawart has been accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service (AKC FSS) and can compete in some AKC sanctioned events. The United Kennel Club (UKC) has fully accepted the Hovawart and they can compete in all UKC sanctioned events. With the Hovawart’s acceptance in the AKC FSS, there are a few more breeders within the United States working diligently to promote this unique and rather playful large guardian dog.
One such breeder is Helderberg Hovawarts in the Helderberg Mountains in upstate New York. They have been working with the Hovawart breed since the early 2000s and in 2007 imported their first Hovawart in from Germany. Koli, or UKC Champion UCD Aruna Vom Drei Ruten Berg, was born at Drei Ruten Berg Hovawarts near Berlin, Germany. This German kennel is very conscientious of temperament and health in their bloodlines, performing Schutzhund training on their Hovawarts and doing genetic testing. Schutzhund training in Germany does vary slightly from the United States in that the dog must pass tests of courage, tracking, and obedience all within the same day for them to achieve a passing score. This takes great determination and focus from both the dog and the trainer. Since coming to the United States, Koli has competed in UKC conformation shows and earned her conformation championship as well as UKC obedience titles including her United Companion Dog (UCD) title. Koli has earned her BH or Begleithunde title meaning she has passed the preliminary tests for her Schutzhund titles. In 2009, Koli was named the number one Hovawart and was invited to participate in the UKC’s Top Ten Invitational at their annual Premier Dog Show. Koli earned her AKC Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) title before retiring from the show ring and performance events.
Aside from participating in UKC sanctioned events, Helderberg Hovawarts can be seen taking their Hovawarts to training classes, meet the breed events, and promoting the Hovawart breed to potential puppy buyers. They are dedicated to educating the general public about the needs of the breed and the requirements necessary to ensure people have a well-trained, mild-mannered companion when they decide to add a Hovawart to their family. These large dogs require a big commitment and Helderberg Hovawarts is willing to go the extra mile to ensure all Hovawarts owners know how to handle their new companion.
Hovawart Dog Name Considerations
The Hovawart is not a fictitious creature that has come to life, but rather a loveable, if not a bit stubborn, large guardian dog deserving of a fun and meaningful name. Some people may hear the name Hovawart and immediately start thinking of names such as Lord Voldemort or Luna Lovegood. Granted these names are bit far-fetched unless you are a diehard J.K. Rowling fan, they may not be ideal for your new Hovawart puppy. There is nothing wrong with channeling your inner Harry Potter, but remember, your new puppy will be saddled with the name you pick for the rest of their life. Look for a name that has a meaning that may describe your new pet’s personality, for instance, a Hovawart puppy that seems bold or intrepid may be called Baumer or Cord, both meaning bold. When your new puppy comes home, take a few days to get to know them and their personality quirks. Many times, they will do something or have a personality idiosyncrasy that will help you find the right name for them. Do not be afraid to look outside the box of typical dog names, your Hovawart will be unique therefore, they deserve a name that is also unique.
