Introduction
To anyone not born in the 80s or a child in the 90s, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids probably seems like a pretty average kids movie. However, it just so happened to be the highest-grossing live action Disney film at the time ($222M). It also launched the career of Joe Johnston, who used the film as his directorial debut after being a behind-the-scenes whiz on many of George Lucas’s most famous films before going on to direct The Rocketeer, The Pagemaster and Jumanji. Best of all though, for anyone who watched as it as kid, it is likely lovingly known as a children’s classic, one replete with great names and references perfect for dog-naming.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Dog Names in Pop Culture
Disney has always had a way with and an appreciation for dogs. If you need any further proof, feel free to dig into their archives as you’ll find no shortage of canine characters from the sprawling doggy cast of Lady and the Tramp to the classics like Pluto and Goofy.
Almost all of the Disney dogs have been animated and given human voices, making their roles that much more identifiable and personal, but a few live action dogs weren’t given such luxuries and still went on to steal the hearts of the viewing audience, including one that is often failed to be mentioned alongside their animated counterparts: Quark.
While many others were able to shine as the stars of their respective films, Quark is largely written off as a side character even though he was a significant factor in the story’s progression. Strangely enough, though his personality wasn’t as developed as those with voices and obvious personalities, Quark was still given a heroic identity, even if his breed, Jack Russell Terriers, are rarely ever afraid of cats like he was in the film.
Outside of being just plain cute, Quark serves a huge purpose within the film. One of his most important roles is highlighting the dynamic between parents and kids. While kids seem to notice just about everything that happens around them, parents’ senses often seemed to be dulled, and Quark makes a perfect example of this when he beats the Szalinski parents to not only figuring out that the kids have been shrunk, but warning them in turn. When he finds the kids, he ferries them into the house in his hair, but Nicky loses his grip and ends up falling into Wayne’s bowl of Cheerios. As a distracted Wayne descends on the bowl with his spoon, unknowingly lifting one of the kids up and almost taking a bite, Quark saves the day by biting Wayne’s leg and forcing him to look at his spoon and then his bowl. After the kids are finally returned to their normal size, Quark is treated with a comically large Alpo dog bone, which he looks upon happily.
While his role may not have been the most significant in Disney’s line of canine companions, he certainly stands as a historic figure who not only saves the day, but acts as one of the very first live action dogs the company employed in its films after decades of animation, which likely had a large impact on the movie’s massive success.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Dog Name Considerations
When trying to come up with an appropriate Honey, I Shrunk the Kids dog name, it’s usually easiest to approach after you’ve compiled a list of your dog’s most prominent traits, especially when it comes to their quirks and personality.
Of course, it’s hard to beat the name Quark, as the unsung hero is one of Disney’s many lovable canine stars, so let’s get that out of the way immediately. It’s a slam dunk nearly every time. After that, however, a good list of names still exists as well. If your dog is a bit of the experimental type, then the names Wayne, Szalinski and Nicky would all be suitable, as both characters were well-known for their scientific experiments and devices. If your dog is a reliable worker, then the name Antie, after the ant who saves the kids, would certainly be suitable. If your dog loves to mess with things when you’re not home, then the names Tommy and Pervis would be good choices. If your dog happens to love fishing, then Big Russ would be a great pick as well.
There are plenty of ways to go with your naming ideas, so don’t be afraid to blow up your creativity or sit down and watch the movie again for further inspiration.
