Introduction
The Hanoverian Hound, also known as the Hanoverian Scenthound or the Hannoverscher Schweibhund, is a medium to large sized hound with a powerful appearance. The Hanoverian Hound does not tire easily and can go on the hunt for hours, tracking their prey through various types of terrain. When not out hunting, the Hanoverian Hound enjoys lounging around the house or keeping watch over their yard. They will bond closely with one family member, although they will be accepting of all family members. They do require a significant amount of activity to keep them healthy. Expect to spend time playing games or going for long walks with your Hanoverian Hound.
Hanoverian Hound Dog Names in Pop Culture
While the Hanoverian Hound is not a popular or well-recognized breed, they are all hound and love letting their presence be known whether they are out in the field or in the backyard. Camellia, or UKC Champion Oak Hill’s Fromarianhill Camellia, is helping to promote her breed. She came to her new family in April 2016 and immediately began her training. She spent three months with professional handler Laura Gregory to learn obedience as well as conformation stacking. In the summer of 2016, Camellia went to her first set of United Kennel Club (UKC) shows where she won over most of the judges and earned her championship. She was brought back home after earning her championship and was entered into the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Foundation Stock Service (FSS) so she is now eligible to compete in AKC events as well as UKC events. In the Fall of 2016, Camellia started her wounded game tracking training. She was a natural and was focused while in the field.
Camellia was bred by Fromarian Hill Kennels and resides at Oak Hill Kennels in Granville County, North Carolina. They are dedicated to health testing their Hanoverian Hounds to ensure all their breeding stock is healthy and free of genetic conditions. Oak Hill Kennels came into existence in 2007 when they purchased an AKC black and tan Coonhound named Suzie who also competed in tracking competitions. During an extended stay in San Diego, California, two more black and tan Coonhounds were added to the kennel. In 2012, one of their Coonhounds was used in a search and rescue effort to locate a mentally disabled family member with a successful outcome. It was not until 2014 that Oak Hill Kennels decided to add the Hanoverian Hound along with the Porcelaine, and the Bavarian Mountain Scenthound. They wanted these dogs to be trained in search and rescue as well as scent work within the field. All three of these rare hound breeds were imported from all over Europe to North Carolina. The Hanoverian Hounds are being exhibited in conformation as well as scent work searching for wounded game. The Hanoverian Hound has been used in police work, medical alert, therapy, search and rescue, service dog, game tracking, and conformation showing. They also excel in many dog performance events. Oak Hill Kennels has been working diligently to promote the rare hound breeds, especially the Hanoverian Hound. Through their efforts, the Hanoverian Hound is moving closer to becoming fully recognized by the AKC.
Hanoverian Hound Dog Name Considerations
There are not many Hanoverian Hounds found within the United States and only a small handful of breeders, therefore you will probably be on a waitlist for a while before you will be able to bring a puppy home. The Hanoverian Hound hails from Germany and while they will like every member of the family, they will pick their favorite person and become that person’s constant companion. Once your new Hanoverian Hound comes home, it is time to search for a name that fits them. This unique hound is probably best suited for a name with German roots. Take time to learn about your new puppy’s personality quirks and look for names that fit them. For example, a Hanoverian Hound that is gentle and loving like a dove could be given the name Jonas which means kind hearted or a dove, or a female puppy who tends to be rebellious or unwilling to submit to their training could be given the name Marai meaning a woman with a rebellious nature. Ensure your new Hanoverian Hound is not given a name that sounds similar to other pets in the household or neighborhood. You also want to avoid any names that sound like common training commands you will be using in their training.
