The Grendel Omnibus is a collection of stories that center around one specific protagonist - Grendel Omnibus: Volume One follows Hunter Rose - a career criminal and the first man to don the Grendel mantle. Diesel

Diesel was a dog that gave her life aiding the French Police during a dangerous, high-stakes raid. Diesel is the sort of dog that most of the criminals named Grendel wouldn't want to encounter; she was brave, determined, and committed to helping others at all costs. As a member of RAID (Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, and Dissuasion) Diesel was highly trained and capable of making specific decisions on her own. This sort of autonomy isn't common in most K9 Poice forces, so RAID is unique in this regard. It's ultimately a good thing that Diesel was able to work autonomously, as she saved countless lives thanks to her split-second decision making.

It all started with the November Paris Bombing of 2015. Terror and anarchy spread around the country like wildfire. RAID was sent out to restore order and find out who initiated the attacks in the first place. Dogs like Diesel set out to sniff out the culprits. Diesel's nose led her true, eventually guiding her and a squad of RAID officers to a precarious building. Diesel took the lead, sneaking and sniffing around the building in search of terrorists. Unfortunately for the police dog, she found a small crew of them who were all well hidden and well armed.

Diesel got caught in the middle of a gunfight between the RAID team and the terrorists. Virtually helpless, the dog could do next to nothing amid the battle. By the time the dust had settled, the terrorists were all shot dead - as well as Diesel. The RAID crew wallowed in grief - their brave comrade died in action, and they weren't entirely sure which side dealt the killing blow. Diesel's body in tow, the RAID crew evacuated the scene of the standoff. Controversy arose when the press learned that an autopsy wasn't performed on Diesel's corpse.

To this day, the question of "who shot Diesel" is a hotly debated topic. Some feel that the officers who shot Diesel should be reprimanded in some way. Most understand that Diesel's death was an unfortunate casualty of a highly stressful and deadly scenario. While it's sad that Diesel was killed in the line of duty, we can at least take solace in the fact that she'll be remembered as a hero. After Diesel was properly buried in a secret location, the French Police Department saluted the dog for her bravery. The hashtags #JeSuisDiesel and #JeSuisChien ("I am Diesel" and "I am a Dog" respectively) were also trending for a good chunk of 2015.
