Introduction
Greek Hound Dog Names in Pop Culture
The name Callie is used in both England and Greece; the name means beautiful, a fitting name for the refined black and tan athletes that make up Greek Hound breed dogs. Callie was also the name given to a beautiful little black and white terrier mix that had been adopted from the local shelter by Emory neuroscientist Gregory Berns. She was the first dog to be trained by Berns to be scanned by a magnetic resonance imaging machine, or MRI, in order to find out more about how canines think and feel by getting readings of their brain activity. In order to get an accurate MRI reading, the patient must lie perfectly still for fifteen minutes to an hour, and must do so in unsettling circumstances.
In the past, dogs who required an MRI for diagnosis were placed under anesthetic, which prevented seeing how the mind reacted to outside stimulus, and training was required so that the dogs not only remained still but did so without a great deal of fear, as the emotion of fear would skew the results. Training Callie, and other dogs like her, was a multi-step process, so Burns built an MRI simulator in his basement and enlisted the assistance of a dog trainer by the name of Mark Spivak. They started by acclimating her to the noise of the MRI as well as to the ear muffs designed to help protect her hearing during the process, then taught her to recline her head on a specially designed headrest and hold it still long enough so that the machine would be able to get a reading.
Once she had mastered the basic components of an MRI, she was introduced to the simulator, where all of the components were combined in order to get an accurate reading. They practiced these skills every day for three months, perfecting the training technique so that it could be used for other dogs as well, giving them a larger selection of dogs to test. By 2017 over ninety dogs have been trained to be scanned, all without any drugs or restraints, and the results have given us a great deal more information about how the canine mind works. Utilizing these methods, scientists have been able to determine that some dogs are more responsive to treats given by strangers, while others react more intensely to treats given by their owners, giving researchers a neuro-biomarker of that specific dog’s personality profile, and have been able to determine that the dog’s brain was able to determine between hand signals that indicated a food or non-food reward, and that the same part of the brain that lit up in anticipation of a food reward did the same when the dog was exposed to the scent of a familiar human, but not as much to an unfamiliar human or either familiar or unfamiliar dogs.
