Introduction
Golden Age Wonder Woman Inspired Dog Names In Pop Culture
Rex the Wonder Dog is one of those artifacts of the Golden Age of comic books that doesn't get mentioned too often anymore in recent years. As such, we wouldn't be surprised if most of you have never even heard of Rex the Wonder Dog - what with his appearances after the Silver Age of comics being so few in number that one could count them on one hand with fingers to spare. Nevertheless, Rex kind of represents what made the Golden Age of comics so special in a number ways - it was an era where artists and writers were willing to try anything that came to mind, throwing everything at the wall just to see what would stick.
For a time, Rex the Wonder Dog did enjoy a fair amount of popularity. With a host of exotic and bizarre superpowers, Rex made a name for himself rescuing people and docile animals from predatory beasts and poachers. The dog also rescued a myriad of folks from natural disasters on a regular basis. In terms of Rex's origin story, he was once just a simple member of the United States Army's K-9 Corps. He worked with his inventively named brother Pooch to help the Allies fight the Axis during WW2. Rex's origin story then basically mirrors Captain America's from this point onward, with the dog receiving super powers thanks to a Super Soldier serum. Rex wouldn't be connected Wonder Woman until much later in both of their superhero careers - during an early Justice Society story.
Earth was once invaded by a hostile Martian fleet, prompting Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, the Flash, and Green Lantern to repel the threat. Rex jumped into the fray, helping the JSA win the day with his impressive talents. It was on this day that the Wonder Dog would meet the Wonder Woman, allowing the two of them to express their mutual respect for one another. Rex would also learn that he wasn't the only Wonder Dog that day - learning about a dog named Streak from another prominent JSA member.
Streak the Wonder Dog has an admittedly tenuous relationship to Wonder Woman, but hey - suspending your disbelief all the way into the stratosphere is kind of necessary if you're going to read any Golden Age comic books or graphic novel with a straight face. Streak the Wonder Dog was actually the pet sidekick of the very first Green Lantern himself - Alan Ladd Wellington Scott. Unlike Rex, Streak didn't really have any special powers; he was simply a very intelligent German Shepherd with an urge to fight crime.Golden Age Wonder Woman Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Another reason to give your dog a Golden Age Wonder Woman inspired name is for the sake of acknowledging progress the character has made. She wouldn't officially become the Wonder Woman we all know and love today until the Silver Age of comics, but it was during the Golden Age that many of her core character concepts were established. When thinking of a name for your new furry addition, consider for a female pup Diana, which is Wonder Woman's first name. If your pup is beautiful in appearance, consider Aphrodite. Is your dog large and impressive? Call her Amazon. Male dogs can be tagged with Steve, Wonder Woman's love interest, or Prince, in reference to Diana's last name.
