Introduction
Most people have probably not heard of the German Longhaired Pointer and if they have encountered one, may just assume it was a different type of gun dog. They are not well-known outside of Germany and there are only a handful of breeders within the United States. The German Longhaired Pointer was bred to search, track, point, and retrieve game in either open field or wooded areas. They can also be used when hunting waterfowl. They can be calm, loving family companions but they do need plenty of exercise and a job to do each day. The German Longhaired Pointer needs a home where they can get out and run each day to burn energy.
German Longhaired Pointer Dog Names in Pop Culture
The German Longhaired Pointer is a breed that can be difficult to find despite them being an excellent hunting dog. Finding a German Longhaired Pointer that has made their way into the news can be challenging, however, in the dog world Elli, Oilleli von der Schmiede, made headlines for being the youngest German Longhaired Pointer to pass the VGP in North America. Elli’s son did surpass her and passed the VGP at 18 months old. VGP is a test that has been established to evaluate the finished versatile hunting dog. A dog that passes this test is able to handle any hunting situation and any type of game. At 11 months old, Elli passed the HZP Suchensieger test. The HZP Suchensieger is a test that evaluates a dog’s advanced natural abilities. Elli also has several DL-GNA HZP Challenge Awards and in 2011 earned a breed certification award. Elli was only the second German Longhaired Pointer to earn the VGP and NAVHDA UT and she did this before she turned two years old. The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) Utility Test (UT) is a three-part test that tests a dog’s ability to hunt in all types of game in any situation.
Then there is VC Bianca vom Coraschatten, or Bianca for short. Bianca was the first German Longhaired Pointer in North American to complete the Totverwiessen at a VGP trial. She is also the highest scoring German Longhaired Pointer in a VGP trial in North America earning 324 points. Bianca was the first German Longhaired Pointer to earn a VGP Prize I and a NAVHDA Versatile Championship title and she was the second youngest dog in all breeds to earn the NAVHDA UT Prize I. Bianca is also the only German Longhaired Pointer to pass the NAVHDA Invitational, one of the hardest hunting tests that a dog has to go through. The North-Central Wisconsin NAVHDA Chapter awarded Bianca the Dog of the Year Award in 2013.
Both Elli and Bianca are owned and trained by Scott and Cortney Schaefer of Wood River, Nebraska. Together, Scott and Corney found a love for this breed when they began searching for a talented, versatile hunting dog. Their first German Longhaired Pointer was Kaylee and they were hooked on how easy she was to train. Kaylee was a calm dog at home, but had an intense hunting drive in the field. The Schaefers named their kennel, Coraschatten, after their beloved Kaylee whose registered name is Cora vom Illertal. The word schatten means shadow in German and the kennel name literally means Cora shadow.
German Longhaired Pointer Dog Name Considerations
The hardest part about deciding on a name for your new German Longhaired Pointer will actually be finding a breeder within the United States. While the popularity of the breed is growing, they are still rare and some breeders have waiting lists for their puppies. Importing a German Longhaired Pointer directly from Germany may also be an option if you can find a breeder that has experience shipping puppies overseas. Once you have found your new German Longhaired Pointer, you will probably want to get to know them before settling on a name. Some people rush and have a name picked out for their new canine companion before their puppy even comes home. There is nothing wrong with this approach, however, you may be stuck with a name that is completely opposite of their actual personality. Being a German breed, there are a plethora of unique, fun German names that would be a great choice for your new puppy. Make a list of possible names and take your time when deciding on a name. A German Longhaired Pointer is a fierce hunter, so names that describe their hunting abilities would be a good choice. Other names with warrior, battle, or ruler such as Alger, Dirk, Gunther, Cayden, or Luther may also be good options for your puppy.
