Introduction
Officially the Republic of Gambia, The Gambia or Gambia is located in West Africa and is almost completely surround by Senegal, except for the country’s western coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. The country is the smallest of mainland Africa at 4127 square miles and the Gambia River runs through it. The country gained independence in 1965 and the majority of its economy is made up of farming, fishing and tourism.
As you consider different names for your canine companion, the country of Gambia is worth a look for unique ideas. While the country is small, you will find that it has no shortage of name possibilities.
Gambia Dog Names In Pop Culture
While Gambia may be a small country, it has its share of well-known people. From politicians to athletes, these individuals offer names to consider for a new canine companion. Take Gambian politician Omar Sey; it turns out that Omar is a name that can found among dogs in social media. For example; Omar the police dog, who graduated from the Academy in 2015. Omar is a German Shepherd who was a year and a half old at the time of his graduation. The pup graduated among 17 police dogs at the police academy in Queens. Originally known as Canine 57, Omar was named for Detective Omar Edwards who was accidentally killed by a fellow officer while off-duty in 2009 while chasing a man that he suspected had broken into his car.
Gambia is also home to sprinter Isaac Jones. There are some well-known canine Isaacs; one is a service dog who assists a veteran named Leslie Nicole Smith, who was injured in Bosnia. She described getting Isaac as a life-changing experience and stated that he “enabled me to get my life back”. Another canine Isaac was a retired guide dog who developed terminal cancer. His owner’s cousin decided to develop a bucket list for the pup for the last weeks of his life. The list received a lot of attention and support online.
The Albert Market is a popular place to spend time in Banjul. It turns out that there are some dogs named Albert that have received some attention. Albert the rescue dog is a small pooch whose hind legs are paralyzed. The rescue pup uses a wheelchair and does not let his disability get in the way of living his life to the fullest. His owner, Jill Lawson, stated that she does not think that Albert realizes that he is different from any other dog. Lawson adopted Albert in 2012 after she discovered him on an adoption website, where the pooch wound up after being found in a ditch on the side of a road, paralyzed and emaciated. Thought to be a Shih Tzu mix, Albert now lives in Connecticut with a canine brother and sister. He is the home’s alpha dog and enjoys taking walks with his siblings on the beach as well as hikes. And of course, he loves to lounge around his home. Albert got his first wheelchair when he was in the shelter and quickly adapted to using it. There are some challenges; Albert requires diaper changes and daily bladder expressing, as well as daily baths. Albert’s mom has found the extra work worth it, stating that “It’s pretty much impossible not to be happy watching Albert run and play with the best of them”.
